Mount Speakers In A Cathedral Ceiling

Home surround sound speakers can be mounted on brackets in a cathedral ceiling.

Satellite speakers for surround sound systems are a great addition to a room with cathedral or vaulted ceilings. Mounting them properly to the ceiling is imperative for the safety of your overhead speakers and for provision of adequate sound. There are several methods to mount the speakers, although the simplest method that will not require any cutting of your cathedral ceiling is to use pre-made mounting brackets with the correct weight-bearing capabilities for your speakers.

Instructions

1. Learn the weight of each speaker and find an appropriate mounting bracket or support system to attach the speaker to. One example of a ceiling mount is the Pinpoint AM 20 Wall and Ceiling Mount Speaker Bracket. For this mount, use the 100 millimeter arm that is included in the mounting set for cathedral ceiling placement.

2. Disassemble the bracket and secure the electrical cover plate to the unit, if necessary for your set up in a pre-wired house.

3. Climb a ladder to reach the speaker placement area of your ceiling. Find the stud on the ceiling with a stud finder or by knocking on the ceiling drywall with your knuckle to listen for the solid sound of a stud or beam. Mark with a pencil where the beam/stud is located. If no stud can be found, use a toggle or butterfly anchor appropriate for the weight of your speaker, which can be purchased from your local hardware store.

4. Loosen the hex screw of the bracket with a hex key wrench and remove the single point adapter. Attach your speaker to the adapter and insert the adapter back into the holder and tighten the hex screw.

5. Set the speaker and bracket in position on the marked stud of your ceiling and drill recommended screws or toggle anchors in the predrilled holes of the bracket. Slightly loosen the hex screw as needed to adjust and rotate the speaker to the desired position once it is mounted and then tighten the screw.

Design Ideas To Redo Vaulted Ceilings In The Kitchen

Ceiling beams can look as rustic or contemporary as you'd like.

Vaulted ceilings open up a room, and are frequently used in the room designed to be the family gathering place; as such, it's not unusual to find them in kitchens. When initially decorating the kitchen, the only thought generally given to the ceiling is how far the exhaust assembly will have to reach, but taking a closer look at the ceiling as a design element instead of just the "lid" to the room can elevate an average room to something special.

Use Color

Instead of just slapping on a coat of ceiling white, consider painting the ceiling one of the colors you used in the rest of the room. A dark color will visually draw the ceiling down and make the room feel more intimate, and it has the added advantage of hiding the stains that can gather as the result of smoke or cooking fumes. If dark colors are too bold for your space, consider using a tint that coordinates with your dominant color. For example, if your walls are a deep gold, paint the ceiling a very pale, neutral yellow or beige to warm the room without losing the sense of height.

Add Beams

If your kitchen decor tends toward rustic, consider adding beams. They can run vertically along the steep sides of the ceiling, laying flush against the surface, or they can run side-to-side at any height. If you hang them low enough, they double as a place to hang pots and pans within easy reach. There's no need to use solid wood beams, which can be pretty expensive in that size -- a skilled carpenter or handyman can build hollow box-like beams that look solid when viewed from below.

Add Texture

Forget the stucco, popcorn and knockdown ceiling textures you're used to. A vaulted ceiling offers much more room for creativity with texture. Consider pressed tin panels, either painted or in polished metal -- these can be pricey, but most home improvement stores sell thermoplastic reproductions that look real from a distance, at a fraction of the price of the originals. Wood paneling is also a popular option due to the sheer variety of wood available. Choose planks that match your wood floors, or a contrasting color for emphasis. Planks made specifically for ceiling applications are thinner than planks made for flooring, so may be lower in price.

Drop Half

Dropping a portion of your vaulted ceiling creates a cozier space and a dramatic visual statement. Consider installing a drop ceiling over the kitchen work area -- this allows room for recessed lighting where you need it most, but leaves the spaciousness of the rest of the room intact. Painting the dropped section a different color than the high section adds interest. The new high wall created on the front of the dropped portion can contain built-in shelves or a small display loft, which will draw the eye upwards and add to the illusion of space, making the area with the low ceiling feel less closed-in. This is a big job, and is best left to a professional.

Design Ideas For A Kitchen Ceiling

Recessed ceiling lighting can provide a pleasant glow in the kitchen.

Kitchen ceilings have a lot of potential, but very few homeowners remember to include the ceiling in their remodel. Even in difficult spaces, such as kitchens with slanted ceilings, it's possible to create an attractive, welcoming and well-lit ceiling. A well-designed kitchen ceiling can enhance cabinet and wall color, make spaces more inviting and improve your workspace.

Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting can provide attractive ambient lighting that's more appealing than a standard fluorescent ceiling mount but less likely to get in the way than pendant lights. This type of lighting is also manipulable; most types of recessed lighting are simple to aim at a specific surface or space, making it much easier to work in.

Wood

Exposed beams or wooden paneling adds a rustic look to any kitchen and is an especially good choice in country or Tuscan-style kitchens. Wood provides a natural warmth and attractive texture that's hard to get with flat paint. Choose dark wood for open kitchens with high ceilings, but avoid it in small kitchens with low ceilings or little natural light. Too much dark wood can make a kitchen seem closed in and unfriendly; however lighter woods, like pine and ash, work well.

Skylights

In kitchens with a sloping ceiling or few windows to the outside, natural light is at a premium. Working under artificial task lighting works well enough, but natural sunlight can make the kitchen feel more cheerful. Consider adding a skylight in a single-story building to provide the missing light in your kitchen. Properly positioned, a skylight lets natural sun in all year long.

Metal Tile

Pressed tin tile was a common ceiling covering in Victorian buildings and can work well in an old-fashioned kitchen. Tin adds a classic look and feel that's getting much harder to find. This tile is often extremely ornate and is displayed in its natural, shiny form or painted. Some types of tin ceiling tile is mounted in the grid for an existing drop ceiling, making installation simple.

Decorative Painting

Painted decorative elements also work well on kitchen ceilings. One classic option is a trompe l' oeil, or "fool the eye" sky. When painted well, this type of decorative painting simulates a warm summer sky filled with fluffy clouds, no matter what the weather is outside. Other decorative painting options include faux marble finishes and decorative work on crown molding.

Refurbish A Travel Trailer Ceiling

Refurbishing a travel trailer ceiling can be difficult, depending on the make and model of your travel trailer. On some models, the interior walls are part of the ceiling structure. On these models, replacement ceiling panels can easily slip over the top of the wall. Other models use the interior wall partitions to hold up the ceiling. This will preclude an easy replacement of the panels. Stripping panels down to the lauan wood is the only option for these models.

Instructions

1. Use a drill with a sanding bit to strip the old vinyl off of the ceiling until the lauan plywood is exposed completely. Take care not to go through the lauan plywood as this will be difficult to repair. Sanding will make a mess, so cover or remove anything that you do not want covered in dust with a drop cloth. Plan to use more than one sanding pad.

2. Measure the area that needs to be recovered with a tape measure. Mark the unfinished side of a ¼-inch piece of Masonite hardboard to match these measurements. Check to see that you have marked the cuts correctly. For example, an L-shaped cut should be drawn as a backwards "L" on the reverse side of the Masonite.

3. Cut the ¼-inch Masonite hardboard with a table saw. Cut out the areas to go around wall cabinets and partitions with a table saw.

4. Install the Masonite hardboard using decorative screws. The panel joints are held in place with covered aluminum strips. Use a drill with a screwdriver bit to secure the aluminum strips to the lauan plywood.

5. Cover all exposed edges with decorative molding. Use construction adhesive to attach the molding to the ceiling.

6. Paint the molding and Masonite hardboard to match the interior of the travel trailer. Allow the paint to dry completely before using the travel trailer.

The Different Types Of Capacitors For Fan Motors

A capacitor is a component whose main function is to store electricity or electrical energy. It also functions as a filter which only allows AC current to flow through while inhibiting passage of DC current. Capacitors have two electrode plates placed parallel to each other and separated by an inductor or insulator. Current stops flowing through the capacitor only if it is fully charged. There are different types of capacitors used in fan motors.

Metalized Film Capacitors

Metalized polyester film capacitors are used in motors of air-conditioning systems which have two capacitors. One capacitor is used with the compressor motor while the second one is used with the fan motor. These capacitors have thin electrodes of aluminum foil interlinked with a very thin plastic dielectric. The plastic, however, can be replaced with other materials such as polyester and polystyrene in cases where high-voltage capacitors are needed.

Ceramic Capacitors

Ceramic capacitors are used in automotive and other applications such as air-conditioning systems because they offer high capacitance and high voltage. A ceramic capacitor consists of a thin ceramic dielectric that is metalized on each side and coated with a protective layer which is dipped in electrified protective material to become thick.

Ceiling Fan Capacitors

Ceiling fan capacitors are mainly used in ceiling fans. They are composed of two conductors separated by a dielectric. When voltage is detected by the two conductors, electrical energy is stored in the capacitor. This electrical energy gives rise to a mechanical force. Ceiling fans need capacitors because they convert energy into mechanical energy which is used to turn the blades. A malfunctioning or damaged capacitor can result in the fan running slowly or not at all. A capacitor may also stop working if the speed settings are not working and may need manual rotation for it to start working.

Close A Ceiling Vent

Homeowners may sometimes need to control the temperature of a room when it is too cold or too hot compared to the rest of the house. Closing a ceiling vent will prevent the flow of air from a forced air heating or cooling system into the room. The vent covers, the portion of the vent visible in the room, commonly have a control mechanism that allows the vent to be partially or fully closed.

Instructions

1. Use a stepladder or step stool to reach the ceiling vent. Locate the control device on the vent cover. This may be a switch on the side of the vent or a control dial at the center.

2. Turn a control dial to the left to close the vent. Dials are generally found on square or round vents. Turn it to the right to open it again.

3. Move the switch down if it is a rectangular vent. The switch can be found on either side of the vent. Move the switch up to open it again.

Residential Ceiling Ideas

Make an impression with an unusual ceiling.

The ceiling is one of the most neglected parts of residential decor. Many homeowners never contemplate anything more adventurous than painting the ceiling in a non-threatening white or cream. Yet for decorators willing to take a risk, the ceiling offers a wide range of unconventional and creative decorating options. Make an impression on your friends with a ceiling that is truly one of a kind.

Hang Artwork

If you have more art than you have wall space, turn your ceiling into a fifth wall to display some extra paintings. Mount small, lighter frames using heavy-duty hook and loop tape. The tape may damage the ceiling paint, but it is by far the easiest way to secure paintings to the ceiling. For heavier pictures, put up security hangers fastened into joists. If you prefer to go frameless, hang posters on the ceiling using poster tack.

Floor to Ceiling

Turn your room upside down by using traditional flooring material on your ceiling. Install wooden boards or bamboo on both the floor and ceiling to give the room a warm, natural look. Use black and white or primary color tiles in geometric patterns for a modern appearance, or install a full mosaic with a broader palette for a decorous, classical look. Use slate or other dark materials to give an earthy, subdued presentation and a relaxing vibe to a den or bedroom.

Using Patterns

Dress up your ceiling and add interest to your room by using patterns. Stencil snowflakes, flowers or geometrical patterns on your ceiling for a simple, bold look. Alternately, use stripes on the ceiling to help orient the room. Use a row of stripes to echo the position of tables, bookcases and other objects in the room. Alternately, use one or two bold stripes to divide the room into sections. Continue the stripes down the wall or even onto the floor for an integrated look that obscures the boundaries between floor, walls and ceiling. For a less forceful look, paint the ceiling white or off-white, and lightly paint a second color with a textured roller or sponge to give the ceiling depth.

Stay Cool While Sleeping

A ceiling fan can help keep you cool while you're sleeping.

Summer nights can be a joy --- staying outside after the sun goes down, not needing to run your heat or bundle up just to leave the house. However, air conditioning costs can be overwhelming, and unless you run your A/C at full blast, the heat can begin to cause discomfort during the night, especially when you're sleeping. Summertime naps during the day can be even worse. There are ways, other than turning up your A/C, that can help you stay cool and comfortable whatever time of day you're sleeping.

Instructions

1. Start simple --- try turning up your ceiling fan and/or using a lighter blanket, or just a sheet. If you don't have a ceiling fan, use a portable fan.

2. Add ice. If you have a portable fan, place a large pan filled with ice cubes directly in front of the fan, preferably at bed-level.

3. Use a slightly damp sheet or towel as a blanket to cover you as you fall asleep. Place a dry towel underneath you. Or, try just wearing damp cotton socks to help cool your feet and thus the rest of your body.

4. Freeze your bedding. Place your sheets, blanket and pillowcases into a freezer bag and put them into the freezer all day.

5. Try different sleeping arrangements. Move downstairs if possible --- warm air rises, so you will have a cooler environment if you sleep on the first floor or in the basement.

6. Modify your sleeping position, if you can. "Spread eagle" can help you stay cooler, and sleep apart from anyone sharing your bed so as not to cultivate body heat.

7. Before bed, air dry after a cool shower. If you don't have time to shower, at least rinse your face and wrists under cold water to cool the blood a bit.

8. Try using a bamboo or straw mat, or invest in a gel mattress. These retain less body heat, diverting it away from you, and will help you stay cooler longer. For even better results, get a hammock and allow air to circulate all around you.

Separately Power A Light & Fan For A Hunter Fan

A ceiling fan with lights

Most ceiling fans will have the option to add a light kit. This kit may be sold separately or included in with the fan itself. Generally the kit must be separately connected to the fan unit. In many applications it is desirable to have the light operated by the wall switch and the fan to remain on, controlled by the manual switch on the fan itself. The unit is designed to accommodate this option by slightly altering the wiring.

Instructions

1. Install additional wire from your wall switch to the location of the ceiling fan. This wire should be at least 12 gauge and should be red in color. This will be the power supply for your light unit. Route the wire from the wall switch and up through the attic to the ceiling fan. This must be one continuous wire with no splices or junctions allowed.

2. Mount the light kit to the ceiling fan unit. Depending on the model you purchased, this will normally be done with quick-connect wire clips. There will be a clip for the white and black wires and in some units the green ground wire will need to be tied together as well. This will connect the light kit to the power supply of the fan.

3. Connect the power supply to the fan motor. After being certain all power is off to the area, connect the black wire from the fan to the black wire from the wall switch. Secure the wires together with a wire nut, being certain not to allow any of the bare wire to show. Repeat this with the white wire. You will also need to connect the green ground wires. Use the wire strippers to strip away the outer insulation on the red wire. Connect this wire to the blue/red wire on the ceiling fan. This will allow the power to bypass the fan and control only the light.

4. Connect the wires to the wall switch. Remove the black wire from the top terminal of the switch. Move this wire to the lower terminal so the two black wires are now secure under a single screw. Make certain the screw is firmly screwed down. Strip back the insulation on the red wire and secure it beneath the top terminal on the wall switch. This will allow the switch to control only the light kit while there is a constant power supply to the fan as it bypasses the wall switch.

5. Complete the fan installation and mounting procedures. Once all work is complete, turn the power back on to the area and test the fan, light and wall switch.

Get Rid Of Birds In Bathroom Exhaust

Birds such as sparrows and starlings sometimes build their nests in buildings, including houses. Some of their favorite nesting sites include under niches, such as a building's eaves, and in or near the exterior vents of dryers, stoves and bathroom exhausts. Their nesting material can clog vents, block air flow and result in a buildup of carbon monoxide. The birds can also accidentally puncture the exhaust vent pipe while building their nest. This can cause a building's interior to harbor mold, as moisture from the bathroom escapes into the ceilings and walls. Birds residing in bathroom exhausts also pose a health hazard. They can spread bird mites, lice and diseases such as histoplasmosis and salmonella. To rid bathroom exhausts of birds, combine humane removal measures with "exclusion tactics" -- actions that will prevent future bird nesting.

Instructions

1. Examine the bathroom vent for signs of eggs or chicks in the nest. If you observe eggs or chicks, you must leave the nest undisturbed until the baby birds mature and leave the nest. If you don't see or hear the chicks chirping loudly for food during the day, or observe a parent bird entering or exiting the bathroom vent for several hours, you can assume the nest is empty.

2. Remove nesting material that is within your reach with a wire coat hanger. Use a garden hose to push out excess nesting material. Pass the hose from the inside of your house through the exhaust vent hose until it appears through the exterior vent, pushing out nesting material and debris as the hose moves through the exhaust.

3. Apply a disinfectant to the exterior vent area after you have removed all the nesting material. Clean the area surrounding the vent thoroughly to prevent the spread of bird-related diseases.

4. Install exclusion devices such as vent covers, bird netting or bird spikes around the exterior of your exhaust. These devices will prevent birds from entering your bathroom exhaust.

Fix A Ceiling Fan Light Switch

Pull chains on a ceiling fan may need to be replaced.

Many ceiling fans include a light to optimize the ceiling space in the room. A pull chain most commonly controls the light on the ceiling fan. When you pull the chain, the light will either increase in brightness or turn off or on. The most common problem is the chain breaking or coming loose from the fan housing. Repairing the switch typically takes less than 10 minutes.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electricity to the room at the circuit breaker to prevent shocks while working on the ceiling fan.

2. Unscrew the globes and bulbs from the ceiling fan by hand.

3. Remove the screws that hold the canopy to the ceiling light. Hold it from the bottom as you unscrew the canopy. Try to keep the screws form falling on the floor. Pull the canopy off.

4. Unscrew the light switch from the canopy plate by removing the nut that holds it in place. Remove the wire connector that holds one end of the switch in place, and cut the wire using your pliers at the other end of the switch.

5. Strip the end of the cut wire and attach it to the new wire switch using a wire connector. Attach the other end of the switch to the wire exposed when the other wire connector was removed from the old switch.

6. Tighten down the new switch using the, nut and reassemble the ceiling fan.

Soundproof A Drop Ceiling

A drop ceiling covers an open space that is easily accessible.

The thin, foam panels of your drop ceiling offer a small bit of sound protection from room to room. But the open space above those panels offers the opportunity for almost total soundproofing between rooms. Installing a double layer of insulation above your drop ceiling will cut off the noise from one level of your house to another while helping to make your home more energy efficient and cutting your monthly heating and cooling costs. Adding this sound barrier takes just a bit of time, a few supplies and a little know-how.

Instructions

1. Remove the retaining screws from the vent covers in the ceiling with your screwdriver. Set the vent covers aside for replacement after the soundproofing is complete. Twist the outer lock rings free of the lights in the ceiling and set them aside for replacement.

2. Remove the foam panels from your drop ceiling. Lift one end of a panel. Slide the panel toward the lifted end. Twist the foam panel and pull it free from the metal frame of the drop ceiling. Stack the foam panels neatly to the side keeping them in order for easy replacement. Stack the panels face up, being very careful not to damage the fragile foam surface.

3. Unroll a piece of R19 insulation with the paper side down. Slide one end of the strip of insulation through the metal frame of the ceiling. Pull the insulation up into the ceiling. Hold the insulation between the wooden joists above the metal frame. Attach the paper tabs on the sides of the insulation to the wooden joists with your staple gun. Cut the insulation as necessary with your shears to achieve a tight, proper fit. Fill every gap between the joists with insulation.

4. Unroll a piece of R19 insulation and cut it into pieces that are 48 inches long. Replace a row of foam panels into the metal frame of the ceiling. Slide a 48-inch piece of insulation through the metal frame and place it on the top of the foam panel with the paper side of the insulation resting on the foam. Continue replacing panels and place a piece of insulation onto each foam panel. Trim the insulation with your shears to fit around the lights, pipes, conduits and vents as necessary.

5. Replace the lock rings onto the lights in the ceiling. Replace the vent covers onto your HVAC duct openings and tighten the retaining screws with your screwdriver.

Wire A Harbor Breeze Utility Ceiling Fan Wall Control

Wiring a Harbor Breeze wall control is a great idea for those wanting more control over fan speed and appearance.

Harbor Breeze is the Lowe's house brand, offering competitive hardware for ceiling fans and lighting. One of the more convenient offerings are the hardwired wall-mounted remote switches, compatible with other well-known brands. One major advantage of these units is that, given the fact they are wired to the electricity, they do not require frequent battery changes. Additionally, quiet operation and reliability make these switches a viable option for those wanting to all but omit pull-chain operation.

Instructions

1. Turn off the breaker at the main electrical panel that feeds the room with the ceiling fan and wall switch.

2. Unscrew the wall plate covering the existing switch. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the screws, and set aside. Remove the small flathead screws in the mounting tabs, holding the existing switch in place.

3. Pull the switch out of the wall. Loosen the flathead screws on the switch that hold the 110v wires captive. Pull off the wires, and lay the old switch aside.

4. Attach the white and black wires as indicated on the rear of the control. Screw them in place using the flathead screwdriver.

5. On the rear of the wall control and the back of the fan receiver, set the dip switches to the same settings. Make sure these differ from any other Harbor Breeze wall controls that might be installed already.

6. Insert the controller back into the wall. Screw on the supplied cover plate using the captive flathead screws and screwdriver.

7. Attach the control receiver to the wires leading from the ceiling, and heading into the fan. Secure these connections using the supplied wire nuts. Place the corresponding bare wires together (do not twist), and screw on the nut until it cannot turn further. The input and output wires are labeled, color coded, and typically match the existing wiring. Fold excess wiring flat against the receiver, securing with zip ties.

8. Apply power to the room housing the fan from the breaker box. Test all fan speeds and light functionality.

Installation Instructions For A Ceiling Fan With Lights

Most ceiling fans today have lights attached.

Ceiling fans sometimes are just fans, but most modern ceiling-fan kits also include lights. This is because the most standard installation method is to hang the fan in place of an existing ceiling light fixture, which means you'll be short a light if there isn't one included in the fan. In most systems, the light and the fan are fed by the same wiring and connected to the same wall switch. Two pull cords then control the two parts separately on the unit itself.

Instructions

1. Turn off the existing light fixture at the wall switch, then cut power at the fuse box. Test the fixture at the switch to make sure the power is dead.

2. Remove the old fixture, accessing it with your ladder and taking out the mounting screws that are holding it to the electrical box in the ceiling. Pull apart the connections of the wires from the fixture to the ceiling, leaving the wire ends hanging from the ceiling box. Normally there will be one black wire, one white wire and one bare copper wire for grounding the circuit.

3. Connect the mounting bracket that came with your fan to the ceiling box, using the provided screws. The screws will go through holes in the bracket that line up with holes in the electrical box. Pull the wires down through the center of the bracket.

4. Assemble the fan on the floor according to its instructions. Don't install the blades yet. You should have a black and a white wire coming out of the top of the unit (the part that mounts to the ceiling).

5. Carry the fan unit up to the electrical box and connect the wires from the fan to the wires from the box. Connect black to black and white to white, using the wire caps to twist the bare wire ends together. Wrap each connection in electric tape. Hook the copper ground wire from the ceiling around the green grounding screw in the fan housing and tighten the screw.

6. Set the fan unit up to the bracket that you mounted earlier, and secure the unit in place to the bracket, using the screws that came with the kit.

7. Put a light bulb in the socket, turn on the power at the fuse box, and test the light and the motor. There will be two pull-cords, one for the light and one for the fan, with both being controlled by the wall switch. When you're sure the unit is working correctly, turn the power back off and install the blades.

Fix A Ceiling Leak

Small Ceiling Leak

Notice a discoloration on your ceiling after a rainstorm? This could be due to a small water leak from your roof. Many roofing companies will charge hundreds of dollars to fix these small problems that you could fix yourself. With a few simple tools and a few hours, your roof could be as good as new. This guide will take you through the basic procedures for fixing a small water leak caused by failed shingles or tar paper.

Instructions

Locating the Leak

1. Locate the leak on your ceiling. If the leak is on a lower level ceiling, go to the floor directly above the leak. Determine whether the water is leaking from the roof or from a water pipe, washer, sink or toilet. If the plumbing is leaking, a plumber will be required to fix the problem. If you have an attic, find the leak there.

2. Drill a small hole through the center of the leak all the way through your roof. Insert the pencil through the hole to help find the problem on top of the roof. Climb on the roof and locate the pencil.

3. Using the speed bar, gently pry away and remove the shingles around the pencil to uncover the tar paper.

4. Remove the tar paper from the affected area. Fill any holes with roofing caulk, including the one you drilled.

5. Cut a new piece of tar paper and "glue" it in place using roofing caulk. Ensure the top and side edges are pushed underneath the existing tar paper so that water will flow over the new tar paper and not channel its way underneath it. The bottom edge of the tar paper must be over the existing tar paper for the same reasoning.

6. Install new shingles over the tar paper.

Mount Bose Speakers

Home theater speakers can be mounted on the wall to reduce clutter and improve surround sound quality.

Home theaters have become a must-have home accessory over the years and Bose audio sound systems have been increasing in quality since the company's humble beginnings in the 1960s. For the best sound experience, some speakers may need to be mounted on the wall. Bose home theater systems will come with a set of brackets to provide the best support.

Instructions

1. Place a bracket on the wall and use a pen to mark the screw holes on the wall. This will make a precise mark where each drill hole should be made. It may be necessary to use a stud finder to make sure there aren't any pipes or wiring behind the wall that might be damaged during drilling. Ideally, the speakers should be mounted to a wooden stud to provide the best support.

2. Drill four start holes with the 2.5mm drill bit. Follow the drill manufacturer's instructions to achieve the best results. Place the bracket over the holes and use the screwdriver to drive the provided screws in place.

3. Insert the provided speaker knobs onto each side of the speaker. Set the speaker into the bracket so that the knobs rest in the hooks. Tighten the knobs so that they are secured onto the bracket.

4. Connect the provided wires to the proper electrical terminals and repeat the previous steps for each speaker. Follow the Bose instruction manual for specific wiring procedures.

Define Capital Rationing

Capital rationing is business tool used for financial purposes

Capital rationing is a business decision to limit the amount available to spend on new investments or projects. The practice describes restricting channels of outflow of funds by placing a cap on the number of new projects. Capital rationing may be employed by different kinds of companies to achieve desired financial targets. The theory behind capital rationing practices is that, when fewer new projects are undertaken, the company is better able to manage them through more time and resources dedicated to existing projects and each new project.

Factors

Factors influencing capital rationing decisions include both financial situations and management philosophy. Companies may wish to limit capital spending when the NPV (net present value) or IRR (internal rate of return) has a pronounced effect on the overall budget amount, or when potential investment opportunities are unfeasible, if current commitments are extensively pursued. Other factors that influence capital rationing decisions include the amount of funds that come from current operations and the feasibility of acquiring capital, either by borrowing or issuing additional stock. In addition, rationing may be implemented in different ways by growth-minded management and management with a more conservative approach.

Artificial Constraint

Capital rationing decisions are implemented only in certain scenarios, such as when a company does not have enough funds to invest in projects that have promise. When there are more projects than funds available, only the most lucrative ones are considered, and other projects, even if they are profitable, are excluded. This is known as artificial constraint, because the amount to be spent on projects is specified by management. Capital rationing occurs due to management fears of sudden growth bursts or when management is reluctant to use external financing.

Types

Capital rationing can be classified into hard and soft, based on whether the factors are external or internal. Hard capital rationing is when constraints that may affect business decisions are externally determined; hard capital rationing does not occur under perfect market conditions. Soft capital rationing occurs when investment expenditure is controlled and limited internally, by restrictions imposed by management.

External Reasons

There are two kinds of reasons for capital rationing--external and internal. When a business is unable to borrow funds from outside sources, it is an external reason for capital rationing. A firm may be unable to borrow funds because of internal financial shortages, substandard operating performance, unfavorable credit conditions or when it introduces a new, untested product. Banks are particularly reluctant to lend to small businesses and individuals with a less-than-satisfactory performance.

Internal Reasons

Internal reasons for capital rationing include management apprehension that expansion would lead to a dilution of control. In a privately-owned company, management may want to limit growth of business to have a stronger hold on the business. In larger companies, upper management may specify spending limits for each department, following a comprehensive corporate strategy. Internal reasons also include human resource constraints, in which the company may not have adequate middle management personnel to cover expansion. Debt constraints are also part of internal reasons for capital rationing; it might be that debt issued earlier prohibit the company from pursuing more debt, because of impositions placed by the earlier debt.

Find Cheap Discount Contemporary Lighting Fixtures

Discount Contemporary Lighting Fixture

Contemporary lights can ad crisp clean design to any room. However, contemporary light fixtures can be hard to find if you don't know where to look. Luckily there are many retail stores as well as online retailers that carry great selections of cheap discount contemporary lighting fixtures.

Instructions

1. Search your local flea markets and auctions for cheap contemporary light fixtures. You can find some great vintage as well as modern contemporary lighting fixtures here for pennies on the dollar. As recent as 10 years ago, contemporary lighting fixtures and furniture weren't as popular as they are now a days. So the prices were a lot more affordable for buyers.

2. Head to Ikea. The Swedish based furniture manufacturer is well know for it's affordable contemporary lighting fixtures. They have a large selection of lighting fixtures that range in price anywhere from $20 to $300. Go to their web site to find the closest Ikea furniture store near you. Even if you have to drive a couple hours, it will be well worth it.

3. Search the internet for cheap discount contemporary lighting fixtures. There are a few web sites dedicated solely to contemporary fixtures. Funkylights.com is one of my personal favorites.

4. Browse through the listings on ebay. You can sometimes come across some great finds that someone found in their basement or attic. Try to avoid buying large pieces on ebay however as they tend to be expensive to ship. Also if they are made with mostly glass they can be extremely fragile and difficult to keep intact during the shipping process.

Hang A Microphone From The Ceiling In A Studio

A high-quality and correctly placed microphone is essential when recording.

Recording in a studio can be expensive. Fortunately, with the increasingly wide availability of high-quality audio equipment and microphones, people can choose to save money on exorbitant studio fees by doing the recording themselves. One of the most effective positions for your microphone is to hang it from the ceiling. This allows for an even balance of sound, especially if it is a group of musicians or speakers being recorded.

Broan 655 Installation

Steam from the shower can eventually ruin your wallcovering if you do not have an exhaust fan installed.

Broan is the manufacturer of various bathroom light and fan kits. These fans are used to rid bathrooms of fumes, steam and heat. The Broan 655 model fan is a combination of a light, heater and an exhaust fan. This unit will help keep the steam from your shower from moistening your wallpaper or wall covering, which could potentially ruin your walls. Installation of the Broan 655 is of moderate difficulty, because you should have some previous electrical experience to stay safe.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electricity going to the bathroom. This can be done at your household circuit breaker.

2. Place the Broan 655 mounting bracket onto the ceiling where you would like the fan to be installed. Using you hammer, pound each of your four nails into the corner holes on the mounting bracket.

3. Line up the tabs on the damper connector with the slots in the housing, then snap the connector into the housing.

4. Place the Broan 655 into the assembly. Insert the fan-mounting screw into the assembly and tighten it with your screwdriver.

Decoration Ideas For Floortoceiling Windows

Floor-to-ceiling windows can be made cosy with the right decorating choices.

Floor-to-ceiling windows have the advantage of lighting up your home and creating a greater visual area in the rooms where they are installed, but they can be a little daunting to decorate. They are tall, giving the room height and depth, and the decorations you use on them need to be equally striking. When decorating floor-to-ceiling windows, factor in the color scheme of the room as well as the goals you are trying to accomplish.

Stained Glass Window Decal

Stained glass gives a room brilliant color, as well as a classy design, but you don't need to pay for a new window installation. Instead, choose a stained glass window decal in a pattern and in colors that suit the room. Avoid the deep and dark colors favored by churches, and choose paler colors, allowing more light in. An abstract design on your stained glass decal or an Art Nouveau design offers you something simple and classic.

Sari Curtains

Make yourself a set of long curtains sewn from sari fabric. Saris tend to be between 12- and 18-feet long, giving you plenty of fabric to work with when you buy two or three. Saris come in silk and cotton as well as a wide variety of colors. Choose a cotton sari for a summer curtain, and look for a heavy silk sari embroidered with gold or silver thread for a richer look in the winter. Saris give your room a rich feel and a jewel-like focal point.

Floor-to-Ceiling Arched Curtain Rod

Instead of using a straight curtain rod, use a curved rod on your floor-to-ceiling windows, which takes away from the straight lines used in a rectangular room, softening the edges and creating a classical look. Hang a pair of heavy drapes from the curved curtain rod, and tie it back with upholstery ties to complement a room where a Victorian aesthetic is called for.

Small Fruit Tree

Place a small fruit tree in a pot in front of the window. A small tree takes advantage of the amount of light coming in and adds a pleasant, natural look to the room. Choose a pot for the small tree that blends with the décor of the room. A terracotta pot matches a simple room while a stoneware pot matches a room that is more elegant.

Remove The Grill Of A Bose 901 Speaker

Remove the Grill of a Bose 901 Speaker

The Bose 901 series of speakers has been the flagship of Bose's speaker lineup for decades. Despite minor changes in the electronics and cosmetics of the system, the speakers have remained largely unchanged. Older systems may eventually need rehabilitation to repair worn speaker surrounds, or to fix damaged or torn speaker grill cloth. The first step in approaching these tasks is to remove the existing speaker grills.

Instructions

1. Place the tip of a small flat-bladed screwdriver under the edge of a staple at the upper right side of the front speaker grill. The staple may initially be hard to see, so look carefully.

2. Tap on the back of the screwdriver handle to push the tip of the screwdriver underneath the staple. Continue until the staple is raised about 1/8-inch from the grill fabric.

3. Grasp the staple with a set of needle-nose pliers and pull it out. Continue pulling out staples this way. There are three on each side of the speaker grill --- six in all.

4. Insert the tip of your screwdriver behind the edge of the grill covering on the back of the speaker. Pry out until you can grasp the fabric with your fingers. Pull firmly on the fabric to separate the grill from the speaker. It's only held on with light glue, so it will pull away when you apply steady pressure.

Repair Drop Ceiling Tiles

Damaged foam drop ceiling tiles should be repaired or replaced immediately.

Drop ceilings, also known as acoustical ceilings, have been used for years to camouflage the pipes, wires and joists above many basements and work areas. The panels can be lifted out of their grid for easy access to the utilities for inspection and repair. One of the most frequent complaints about drop ceilings is the fact that the tiles break, crack or otherwise damage easily. Replacing damaged ceiling tiles is easy, but if you don't have a matching replacement tile, fix your damaged tile and maintain the look of your ceiling.

Instructions

1. Stretch out the drop cloth in an unused area. Place the damaged ceiling tile face down and press the pieces as close together as you can. Take your time and line up the sides of the cracks or pieces to maintain the shape of the outer edge.

2. Apply a bead of adhesive to the crack. Press the halves of the tile together to be sure the adhesive did not separate them. Smooth the bead of adhesive with your finger. Be careful not to disturb the tile pieces. Gently lay the board on top of the crack. Let the adhesive cure for 12 hours.

3. Remove the board and gently flip the tile. Apply a bead of caulk to the crack on the face of the tile. Smooth the caulk with your finger while pressing hard enough to push it just below the surface of the face of the tile. Let the caulk cure for 12 hours.

4. Use your artist's paintbrush to paint the caulk. Take your time and dab the paint over the caulk and the tile edge on both sides to make it blend with the rest of the tile. Apply several coats of paint, allowing each to dry completely before the next application.

5. Gently lift the tile. Hold it at an angle and slide it up into the ceiling grid. Position the tile over the hanging track and gently lower it into place.

Calculate Series Ee Savings Bonds

Series EE savings bonds can earn interest for 30 years.

An EE savings bond is a low-risk savings product backed by the U.S. government. Bonds can be bought online through the U.S. Department of the Treasury or in person at banks or credit unions. Bonds are issued on paper and electronically and can earn interest for up to 30 years, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and are guaranteed to double in value after 20 years. A paper bond is issued at half of face value and electronic bonds are issued at face value.

Instructions

1. Check the EE savings bond issue date. An EE bond must be at least 1 year old before it can be redeemed. The U.S. Department of the Treasury recommends checking when interest is added to a bond before redemption. Interest is added monthly to bonds issued after May 1997; interest is added every six months to bonds issued before May 1997.

2. Determine interest rates that affect the bond. Bonds issued after May 2005 earn interest at a fixed rate that can change every six months (on May 1 and Nov. 1). Older EE bonds, particularly those issued before May 1995, are based on a five-year treasury securities yield. The U.S. Department of the Treasury publishes a rate chart that can be accessed online.

3. Take possible penalties into consideration. Bonds that are less than five years from the original issue date are subject to a penalty of three months' interest.

4. Add interest to the amount originally paid for the bond at issue date. Subtract penalties to determine the final value of the bond.

Remove Decorative Ceiling Beams

Decorative ceiling beams add distinction without adding weight.

Decorative ceiling beams are non-load-bearing beams typically created by covering a foam core with wood veneer. This faux beam, connected to the ceiling with an adhesive or screws and nails, gives a room the appearance of having actual wooden beams without the high cost of real beams and the supports or reinforcing needed to hold them in place. There are no specialized tools needed to remove decorative beams. The process is simply the reversal of the installation process: remove the attachment points, remove the beam itself then remove the mounting board.

Instructions

1. Climb a ladder and examine a beam closely where it meets the ceiling. Look for the attachment areas between the beam and the ceiling or joists: most decorative beams use nails or screws driven through the beam and countersunk beneath the surface of the beam to blend in but occasionally installers glue lightweight beams made of foam directly into place. Look for small patches of discoloration along the beam where the installers covered countersunk screws or nails with wood putty.

2. Ask a helper to help hold the beam in place as you work your way down its length to prevent it from crashing down. Pull the connecting nails or screws from the beam using a claw hammer or screwdriver. Dig around the ends of the nails using a utility knife until you can grasp the nail heads with the claw of the hammer and pull them free. Unscrew and remove the screws from the beam if screws were used. Cut the foam into sections using the utility knife if it was glued directly in place and pull it free.

3. Pull the beam from the length of wood that it's attached to and that runs across the ceiling; this will likely be a 2-by-4 screwed into the ceiling joists.

4. Unscrew the length of wood using the screwdriver and pull it from the ceiling to complete the removal of the decorative beam.

5. Use a putty knife to remove any foam remaining on the ceiling from faux beams. Brush any remaining adhesive with adhesive remover. Allow the remover to sit in place five minutes to penetrate the adhesive, then wipe the adhesive and remover from the ceiling with a clean piece of cloth.

Installation Instructions For Hampton Bay Model Number 52cl Ceiling Fans

The Hampton Bay 52-Cl Ceiling Fan is a 52-inch-wide fan designed for larger living spaces such as family rooms and dining rooms. It has a built in light fixture so you do not loose light in the room when you install the fan. The ceiling fan uses basic wiring connections and a ceiling fan electrical box. This makes the installation straightforward and easy to complete.

Instructions

1. Turn off the breaker that controls the light fixture currently installed in the room. Test the fixture by attempting to turn it on. If the fixture turns on, locate the correct breaker and then turn it off.

2. Remove the cover from the existing light fixture, remove the bulb and then remove the screws that secure the light fixture to the ceiling. Disconnect the black and white electrical wires that connect the circuit's wires to the wires coming from the light. Remove the grounding screw from the copper wire that secures to the electrical box and place the light fixture off to the side.

3. Remove the screws that hold the fixture strap to the electrical box. Remove the screws that secure the electrical box to the joist in the ceiling and then pull the electrical box down and out of the ceiling.

4. Loosen the clamp on the electrical box that holds the electrical wires in place, then pull the electrical wires out of the electrical box.

5. Slide the wires through the access hole on the ceiling-fan approved electrical box. Tighten the screw to lock the wires in place.

6. Secure the new electrical box to the joist in the ceiling with the supplied screws and your screwdriver.

7. Secure the fan bracket to the electrical box with the supplied machine screws and your screwdriver.

8. Attach the fan blades to the Hampton Bay fan motor. You need a screwdriver and a wrench to attach the blades to the motor since the blades use screws and nuts for fasteners.

9. Place the ball located at the end of the Hampton Bay motor shaft onto the fan bracket. This suspends the ceiling fan.

10. Secure the black and blue wires extending from the ceiling fan to the black wires extending from the ceiling. Attach the white wire extending from the fan and ceiling together and then secure the green wire to the grounding screw on the electrical box. Cover the wire connections with wire nuts. Tuck the wires up into the electrical box.

11. Slide the Hampton Bay canopy up the motor shaft and butt it up against the ceiling. The canopy hides the electrical box. Secure the canopy in place by tightening the setscrew located on the side of the canopy.

12. Place a light bulb into the light on the Hampton Bay ceiling fan, then install the light fixture cover. Turn on the circuit breaker to restore power to the circuit.

Hang Curtains At The Level Of The Ceiling

While curtains are normally perceived as being exclusively used to decorate windows, these panels of fabric can be used in a number of other creative ways. Curtains can be hung at ceiling level to create the illusion of separate spaces and to divide sections of the room from one another. This style of decorating can be particularly useful in studio apartments, as it can provide more privacy in the sleeping area. Whether you are seeking to hang curtains at ceiling level for decorative or practical purposes, it is a moderately easy process.

Instructions

1. Use the tape measure to calculate the distance across the ceiling where you want the curtains to hang. Make a mark at each end of the measurement using a pencil.

2. Measure and cut a piece of aircraft cable that is six inches longer than the measurement you took on the ceiling. Use the cable cutter to cut the cable so that you have a clean, precise cut.

3. Drill holes in the ceiling for placement of the hooks. Push in an anchor in each hole and screw in the hooks.

4. Make a loop at one end of the cable and secure it into place using a rope clip. Loop this end of the cable onto one of the hooks suspended from the ceiling.

5. Expand the turnbuckle by loosening the lock nuts at each end. Attach the turnbuckle to the other hook. Stretch the cable across the ceiling until it reaches the turnbuckle. Pull the cable taut through the turnbuckle and tighten the turnbuckle.

6. Remove the turnbuckle and loop the cable through the other hook. Secure the loop in place with a rope clip and use the cable cutter to cut any excess cable.

7. Tug gently at the cable to test the sturdiness of the hooks and the rigidness of the cable. The cable should be pulled taut enough that it is barely able to move. The hooks should be secured tightly and not pull away from the ceiling.

8. Take down one side of the cable and slip your curtains onto the cable. Rehang the loop of the cable on the hook. Arrange the curtains evenly across the cable.

Cut Crown Molding For A Vault Ceiling

Crown molding adds beauty to any room. However, many people shy away from installing crown molding because of the compound miter cuts required for installation. Putting crown molding on a vaulted ceiling is even more difficult because of the additional angles, and because these cuts are not the usual 45-degree angles. You can make the compound miter cuts required for a challenging vaulted ceiling if you know a few tricks of the trade.

Instructions

1. Place a digital angle finder against the two surfaces where the first miter will go. Read the angle on the digital angle finder.

2. Adjust your compound miter saw to half of the angle found in Step 1. Refer to a miter saw chart in the resources for the angle to set your miter saw. For example, if the angle of the corner was 90 degrees, the miter saw is set at 45-degrees for each side of the miter joint.

3. Cut two pieces of test crown molding at least 12 inches long on your miter saw. Crown molding is cut upside down on the miter saw; the table of the miter saw is like the ceiling, and the fence of the saw is like the wall. Adjust the crown molding so it sits square to each. This will be at 45 degrees or 32 degrees, depending on the style of crown molding you are using. You can tell by looking at the gap where the table and the fence meets behind the crown molding.

4. Turn the knob on the miter saw stops to hold the crown in this position as you cut. The miter saw acts as a second adjustable fence that the crown molding sits between as it is being cut.

5. Lower the blade of the miter saw slowly through the wood. This will help keep the crown molding from splintering.

6. Hold the test pieces in place against the ceiling, as they will be installed. If the joint is too tight, it will not sit flat against both surfaces. Adjust the miter angle 1 degree at a time, and re-cut the test crown molding until you have a perfect joint.

Attach Rafters To Ceiling Joists

Rafters are angled beams supporting the roof, while joists are the horizontal beams.

Rafters are the beams that run just under the roof of a home and represent the roof's angle. Joists are the horizontal beams that run just above the ceiling and anchor the rafter. Where these two housing frame components meet, they must be attached securely in order to ensure the stability and longevity of the roof.

Instructions

1. Check the angle of the joists to ensure they are horizontal before attaching them to the rafter. Lay a water level on the top of the joist or check the angle with a laser level. If the joist does not sit perfectly level, then the wall heights must be corrected before the joists are attached.

2. Ensure that the ends of the joists that may project above the rafter are trimmed off before attaching the joists to the rafters. Use a table saw to cut off the angle that projects over the rafter.

3. Set the end of the joist on top of the wall (the other end of the joist should rest on the opposite wall). The trimmed edge of the joist should be up. Set the notched end of the rafter on the wall so that it sits flush with the top edge of the wall. Have a partner hold the rest of the rafter in place while you connect the joist and the rafter. The rafter and joist should sit flush against one another.

4. Attach a seismic anchor to the side of the rafter opposite the joist. Seismic anchors are joints with a 90-degree-angle twist that connect the rafters directly to the wall.

5. Nail the joist to the rafter. Use at least four nails per joist/rafter connection. Nails should be at least one and a half times the depth of the rafter and joist beams. Usually, these beams are 2-inches by 4-inches, and so the depth is 2 inches. Thus, the nails should be three inch long wood nails.

6. Test the rafter/joist attachment manually for stability by rocking it with your palm. For added stability, pre-drill holes for screws and anchor with 3-inch wood screws.

Replace A Fan'S Pull Switch

Occasionally the pull chain on a ceiling fan can break off from the pull switch, requiring that it be replaced. The fan's pull chain attaches to the switch and when the chain breaks, you need to replace the entire switch. The pull switch is attached to the casing with a nut that screws onto the switch from the outside. You can replace the fan's pull switch with a screwdriver in less than an hour.

Instructions

1. Turn off power to the ceiling fan at the circuit breaker before attempting to replace the fan's pull switch. Unscrew the screws on the side of the light fixture that holds the fixture to the ceiling fan.

2. Unfasten the pull switch nut outside the ceiling fan casing by unscrewing by hand the nut from the fixture. Take the pull switch out of the casing with the electrical wires still attached to the switch.

3. Make a note of the colors of the electrical wires and how they are attached to the pull switch. To make it easier to reattach the wires to the new switch, draw a diagram of how the wires are connected.

4. Disconnect the electrical wires from the pull switch by loosening the terminals with a screwdriver and removing the wires. Attach the electrical wires to the new pull switch by threading the electrical wires around the terminals the same way they came off and tightening the terminals with the screwdriver.

5. Insert the electrical wires and pull switch into the casing and screw the nut by hand onto the pull switch threads on the outside of the casing. Fasten the light fixture to the bottom of the casing with the screws.

6. Turn the power to the ceiling fan on at the circuit breaker.

Create Tray Ceilings

Tray ceilings add an elegant touch to rooms.

Building a tray ceiling is not as difficult as it might look. The bottom panel, called the soffit, and the edge pieces, called flanges, are the major components. The key to a successful tray ceiling installation is measuring the boards accurately and attaching them securely. The fun part is adding the molding and seeing the tray ceiling come to life with decorative touches. Make sure you have a helper with this project. It is not possible to install a tray ceiling single-handedly.

Instructions

1. Determine the dimensions for your tray ceiling. Standard widths for the soffit panel (which is the lower flat component) are 6 and 8 inches. You can make the soffit wider if you have a large room. However, you should avoid installing an extra-wide soffit in a small room because it will make the space look even smaller.

2. Stand on a ladder and measure from the edge of the ceiling to the width you selected. Start at a corner and draw a chalk mark every 3 feet with a yardstick. Then connect the marks to create a line to represent the edge. While you are on the ladder, use a stud finder and mark the locations of the studs on the ceiling with an "X."

3. Measure the final length of each chalk line. Cut 2-by-4 wood boards according to your measurements. The boards will be used to form the flanges for the tray ceiling structure.

4. Apply a bead of contact cement down the center of the 2-by-4 boards to adhere the boards to the ceiling so they do not fall. Use 4-inch wood nails to tack the boards to the stud points every 14 inches.

5. Measure from the bottom edge of the 2-by-4 boards to the top of the ceiling. Cut OSB panels for each side of the tray according to your measurements. You will probably have to cut multiple panels to fit the longer sides of the ceiling. Attach the OSB panels to the 2-by-4 boards with 3-inch wood screws.

6. Remove any existing molding, such as crown molding along the perimeter of the ceiling. Measure the lengths of each edge and cut 2-by-4 pieces accordingly. Use your stud finder to locate and mark stud locations on all walls. Nail the 2-by-4 boards to each wall.

7. Measure the width from the edge of the frame to the wall. Cut OSB panels according to the width and the total length along each wall. Attach the OSB panels to the bottom edges of the frame boards.

8. Measure and cut half-inch drywall and attach it on top of the OSB using 3-inch wood screws. Tape seams and spackle imperfections. Prime and paint the drywall.

9. Use your length and width measurements to cut molding strips (if you desire) to add a formal and decorative treatment to the tray frame. Use 2-inch nails to attach the molding to the frame. Otherwise, attach drywall tape to create a finished edge along each side of the frame and to cover seams between OSB panels.

What Does Kilz Paint Do For A Wall

Kilz is a manufacturer of primer paints and select specialty paints as well. The company is best known for its primer products that claim to provide superior coverage and hiding of previous stains, odors and blemishes collected after the last paint job of the room. Kilz paints can help you start with a fresh and evenly coated wall that will provide for superior coverage of your new paint colors.

Water-Based

Kilz manufactures both water-based and oil-based primers. If you plan on painting with a water-based latex paint, you should prime your walls with a water-based primer. Kilz offers many water-based paints that claim to provide a range of coverage qualities and benefits to your painting surface including providing an even surface to apply your finishing coat, covering porous surfaces, and covering spackle blemishes and stains. Kilz latex water-based primer can be used beneath an oil-based coat. This provides a range of flexibility for the user. Kilz also offers paints for exterior surfaces as well.

Oil-Based

Apply an oil-based primer if your finishing coat will be oil-based as well. The Kilz oil-based primers have a greater ability to block stains and odors such as cooking grease or nicotine, which tend to stick to the walls and provide a pungent odor in some homes. For those who want to benefit from the superior hiding ability of oil-based paints but cannot stand the odor associated with it, Kilz offers an odorless oil-based primer.

Specialty Paints

Kilz manufacturers other products other than primers even though that's what they are generally known to do best in the painting industry. Kilz offers products such as a ceiling paint to provide coverage for most common ceiling stains such as water stains with minimal spattering. The primer dries to a flat white and can be applied to every interior surface with the same efficiency. The colors changing primer products changes from pink to white as it dries to make sure you never miss a spot. This is ideal for ceilings as well where you usually apply a white primer to a white-colored ceiling.

Priming Needs

Many paint companies offer a primer and painting combination that eliminates the need to apply a primer such as Kilz. The ability to hide and cover porous surfaces are often debated by old-fashioned paint professionals who believe a good primer is the only way to start with an evenly coated paint. Rewire A Ceiling Lamp With The Ground Wire To A Plug In Lamp

An attractive ceiling lamp hanging in place

You do not need to trash every light fixture during a remodel. Rewire attractive or unusual ceiling lamps to become plug-in lamps. Use these recycled fixtures to maintain a sense of the character of the home before it was renovated.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electricity to the ceiling lamp. Use a ladder long enough to allow you to reach the ceiling comfortably. Unfasten the lamp from the ceiling by using a screwdriver to remove the screws that anchor into place. Clip the wires that power the lamp with wire cutters or disconnect them where they are attached to the house wiring. Save as much of the original wire as possible when removing the ceiling lamp. If you can salvage as much as five feet of wire coming from the lamp that has not been spliced, it will make the job much easier. A shorter wire can add an extra step to the process.

2. Make sure the ground wire is attached to the body of the lamp. This wire is usually attached to a screw near the area where the rest of the wire enters the lamp. The ground will be separated from the rest of the wire and secured under this screw. It is often a green wire. If it is loose or unattached, fasten it to the lamp before beginning.

3. Attach an additional piece of wire to lengthen the lamp wire if it is too short. It is best to trim the original wire enough so that the connection is hidden behind the lamp. This will make the job look cleaner. Use wire strippers to strip the insulation from the ends of all of the wires back about 1/2 inch. Holding the matching wire ends together, screw a wire nut onto each connection until the nut is tight. This should make the connection safe and secure. Seal the connections by wrapping them with electrical tape.

4. Strip the other ends of the lengthened wires, or the ends of the original wires with the wire strippers if they were long enough. Use a good-quality three-pronged plug and thread the wire inside of it. With the plug cover pulled back, three screws should be apparent. One of these is the extra ground. It will be attached to the round tine. Attach the extra ground wire to this screw. The other two wires should then be attached to the two remaining screws.

5. Put the plug cover back into place and tighten the security screw at the upper end of the plug, if there is one. Make sure that everything is well connected and secure. The lamp should be ready for use.

Kitchen Ideas For Low Ceilings

Play with light, colors and patterns to create the illusion that a kitchen ceiling is taller than it actually is.

Low kitchen ceilings can make the room feel dark and cave-like. Without resorting to a major renovation, there are some design choices that will help your kitchen feel more open, the walls appear taller, and the ceiling higher. Playing with color, lighting and patterns can achieve the illusion of a higher ceiling.

Eliminate Horizontal Details

Get rid of any architectural details in the kitchen that run horizontally, except for the counters, of course. If the kitchen has a chair rail, remove it to give the walls a longer look. The chair rail and other horizontal design elements cut the wall into sections, making it appear shorter from floor to ceiling. Thick baseboards and crown molding will also shorten the walls.

Paint the Ceiling Lighter

A white or very light-colored ceiling will make it appear higher. A paint with a slight sheen will reflect light even more, giving the room an airy, open feel. The rest of the room should be painted or wall-papered a slightly darker color than the ceiling. Another trick designers use when painting a low ceiling is to extend the paint line down the walls about three inches, which gives the illusion that the ceiling is taller. A dark floor paired with a light ceiling does double duty by visually recessing the floor while extending the ceiling at the same time. In general, light colors in the kitchen, from cabinets to countertops, will make the room appear larger.

Use Vertical Wall Stripes

If plain walls just won't cut it, homeowners can try to incorporate a vertical design onto the walls to make them appear longer. Some wallpapers have a vertical pattern or stripe that does the trick. Painting a two-tone stripe pattern works well for a more subtle effect.

Lay Down Bold Rugs

Bold kitchen rugs will help draw attention downward, and in combination with a darker floor and light ceiling will help elongate the walls and the entire kitchen. Creatively designed kitchen rugs can be found at home decor stores and online.

Install Upward Lighting

Lighting and light fixtures can play an important role in making a ceiling appear higher. Do not use lights that point away from the ceiling, recessed lights or pendulum lighting, which make a kitchen feel more closed in. Pendulum lights are a kitchen favorite over the sink or a snack bar, but if the ceiling is low, they will only make it seem lower. Instead, choose lights and fixtures that face upward or are reflected upward. If there is space for it, install a runner of lights on the open space above the top cabinets to illuminate the ceiling, visually lifting it. If upward lighting does not provide adequate lighting for kitchen work, homeowners can install lighting below the top cabinets that illuminates the countertops.
