Modern Lighting Design

Modern lighting design indicates illumination of a space that uses the most recent light technology available. The old-fashioned triangular lampshades or chandeliers do not fall under the category of "modern." Many modern lighting techniques can be found in contemporary art galleries or museums. Modern lighting design usually looks more expensive, but often costs the same as antique lights.

Sconces

A sconce is a light that attaches directly to a wall, illuminating the surface area. These lights will not bring as much light into a room as would a chandelier light or table lamp, as the light is usually aimed directly onto the wall. The effect of a sconce light is softer on the entire space of a room. The sconce is similar to the archaic design of a candle hung against a wall.

Floor Lights

A rising trend inside modern homes is to keep lights low to the ground. Some homes and spaces even have lights installed into the floor, shining upwards. Low-level lighting creates a soft and comfortable atmosphere. It works best in areas that attempt a minimalist design of space. Low-level lights also can be installed directly into the side of a wall, like an inverted sconce near the floor. This is often seen as an outdoor lighting effect, usually along front door walkways.

Track Lighting

Track lights are usually a group of small lights that hang from the ceiling. They are most often seen above sinks or counters, as a method of extra illumination with stylish results. A track is attached lengthwise on the ceiling, and the lights are then attached to the track. Once on the track, the lights can be aimed in any direction desired, like tiny spotlights. Another form of modern ceiling light is a pendant. Pendants are an offshoot of track lighting. They are single hanging lights that are attached directly to the ceiling (without a track).
