Build A Ceiling Rack For Wine Glasses

Build a wine glass rack to display your stemware collection.

A wine glass rack will add a touch of class to your at-home bar and stemware collection. It's an easy DIY project that you can complete in a day. This rack will have rectangular shape, and will easily accommodate at least two dozen standard-size wine glasses. Pick a good ceiling location and height for your rack that will be easy to reach for retrieving glasses to fill and serve wine.

Instructions

1. Measure and cut two pieces of the 1-by-4 wood boards 18 inches long, and cut two pieces 33 inches long with a circular saw. These boards will be used to create the frame for the wine glass holder. Place the 33-inch boards on the top and bottom and the 18-inch boards on the left and right sides. Drill a pilot hole 3/4 inch from the edges of each end of the two 33-inch boards. Attach the 18-inch boards to the 33-inch boards with wood screws.

2. Lay the frame flat and use a pencil to mark the top and bottom edges every six inches, starting from the left side. You should have five markings to indicate where to attach the boards for the slats to hold the glasses, after attaching the first slat to the left side.

3. Cut six 18-inch long pieces from the ½-by-4 boards. Place the pieces vertically on top of the frame so that the left edges line up with your pencil marks. Drill a pilot hole in the center of each slat on the top and bottom. Screw the slats onto the frame with wood screws.

4. Sand rough edges and paint or stain all sides and surfaces as you desire and allow to dry.

5. Flip the frame over so that the side with the slats is on the bottom. Mark the left and right sides of the frame four inches from the top and four inches from the bottom. Drill pilot holes on each mark and screw in the hooks.

6. Place a ladder under the location for the rack. Climb up the ladder with your tape measure, a stud finder, the chain link and a pencil to mark locations for the ceiling hooks.

7. Activate the stud finder and mark a spot for the first hook with your pencil. Measure 14 inches out, vertically, to place a mark for the second ceiling hook. Locate the stud for the right side ceiling hooks and mark the locations.

8. Hammer a 2-inch finishing nail into each marked spot as a pilot for screwing in the ceiling hooks. Hang the chain from the ceiling to determine the height you want for the wine glass rack and measure with your tape measure.

9. Stretch out the chain on a flat surface and mark the chain according to your length measurement. Add six inches to the length so you can make adjustments if needed and make a second mark. Measure out four lengths and detach the chains using pliers.

10. Pull out the finishing nail and screw in a ceiling hook at each marking. Attach one S-hook to each ceiling hook and the top link of the chain.

11. Get a helper to hold the wine rack as you attach each S-hook to the screw hook on the top of the rack. Raise or lower where the S-hooks on the bottom are connected to balance your wine glass rack and complete the installation.
