Wire A Twoswitch Ceiling Fan

Installing a new ceiling fan in a room can improve air circulation, as well as add a distinctive lighting feature. Contemporary ceiling fans are available in a wide range of sizes and styles to complement any decor. A room with a three-way circuit can provide you with the convenience being able to control the fan and light from two separate switch locations in the room.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electrical power to the ceiling junction box at the main electrical panel.

2. Extract and separate the circuit wires from the ceiling junction box. On a three-way circuit, you will find two cables, each with a black, white and bare copper wire. Strip approximately 4 to 6 inches of sheathing from the outside of the two cables. If the two insulated wires in each cable are already available, strip approximately 1/2 inch of the sheathing from both the black and white wires, using a utility knife or wire strippers.

3. Mount the ceiling fan hanger bracket to the ceiling junction box according to the fan manufacturer's directions.

4. Hang the ceiling fan's down rod on the hanger bracket and separate the fan's electrical wires.

5. Pull the two white wires from the ceiling junction box to the side, align the bare tips and connect them together, using a wire nut. Wrap a short strip of electrical tape around the wire nut to secure it in place.

6. Separate the black wires from the ceiling junction box.

7. Extract the electrical wires from the ceiling fan down rod and separate them. Align the black wire from the ceiling fan with one of the black wires from the ceiling box, and secure the ends together with a wire nut. Wrap a short strip of electrical tape around the wire nut to secure it in place.

8. Align the white wire from the ceiling fan with the remaining black wire from the ceiling box and secure the ends together with a wire nut. Wrap a short strip of electrical tape around the wire nut to secure it in place.

9. Connect the ground wire from the ceiling fan to the ground wire from the ceiling box, using a wire nut. The ground wire from the fan may have green insulation, or it could be bare copper.

10. Complete the ceiling fan installation according to the manufacturer's instructions, and then restore power to the fixture at the main electrical panel.
