Choose Paint Colors For Ceilings & Walls

Choose Paint Colors for Ceilings & Walls

Picking the right colors for each room sets the tone. The colors of your walls and ceiling can either give your home a warm, welcoming feeling or a cold, empty feeling. Because so many paint colors exist, you might find choosing the right ones daunting. Fortunately, if you follow a few simple steps, you will easily choose the right paint colors for your ceilings and walls.

1. Pick a color that complements the room's size. For instance, certain colors can create an illusion of "extra space" or make a room seem smaller. Large rooms accommodate darker colors without creating a "claustrophobic" feeling, but smaller rooms benefit more from light colors that create the illusion of more space.

2. Decide what colors match your furniture. Sharply contrasting colors create a modern feel. Dark, earthy tones complement wood furniture and create a cozy feeling. Bright, primary colors work to great effect in a child's room or play room.

3. Determine what mood you want to create. Blues pacify and calm. Reds, which might seem an odd color choice, excite and tantalize, so they work well in kitchens. Yellows create a "cheery" mood. To complete the mood, balance your wall with your ceiling by selecting a color in the same family of colors. For instance, to maintain a cheerful look, you might offset a bright yellow wall with a pale, almost white yellow for the ceiling or even a light blue.

4. Use contrast. For instance, avoid painting the walls the same color as the ceiling. White walls with white ceilings might create an empty feeling, but dark green walls with a white ceiling contrast well. The dark green might make a larger room seem cozy, and the white ceiling might create a balanced, "open" feeling.

5. Determine what room you want to paint. For instance, different rooms benefit more from certain color schemes. An art room might benefit from stark white walls with dark ceiling to show off the art. A kitchen might work with red walls and white or black ceiling runners. A living room might work well with calming shades of browns, greens, or blues with white ceilings.
