Install A Hampton Bay Exterior Wall Lantern Light

Installing Hampton Bay decorative wall lanterns on the exterior of your home not only enhances your home's outward appearance, it can also increase the security around your home. Lanterns installed on either side of your front door give you enough light to unlock your door at night and clearly see approaching visitors. Installing lanterns on both sides of your garage will brighten your driveway and discourage intruders.

Instructions

1. Turn off the breaker inside your breaker panel that supplies electricity to your current exterior wall light.

2. Remove the screws holding the current light to the exterior junction box. Take the light fixture from the box to expose the wiring inside the box. Untwist the wire connectors from the wires inside the junction box to disconnect and remove the light from the wall.

3. Assemble the Hampton Bay exterior wall lantern following the instructions provided with the fixture. Attach the fixture crossbar provided with the wall lantern's mounting hardware to the exterior junction box with screws also provided with the mounting hardware. Depending on the style of lantern, the crossbar is a 4-inch circle of metal with several holes cut in it, a 4-inch by 1-inch metal plate with several holes or two 4-inch by 1-inch metal plates connected in the center to form a cross. The number of holes cut into the crossbars can vary.

4. Connect the electrical wiring from the junction box to the Hampton Bay exterior wall lantern. Match the white wire from the lantern to the white wire from the junction box. Twist an orange wire connector onto the two wires, bringing them together. Repeat the connection with the black wire from the lantern and the black wire from the junction box. Connect the green wire from the lantern to the bare copper wire from the junction box with another orange wire connector to complete the wiring connections.

5. Attach the Hampton Bay exterior wall lantern to the junction box or fixture crossbar. Depending on the design style, you attach the lantern with screws directly to the junction box, attach the lantern to the fixture crossbar with mounting screws or mount it onto two screws permanently attached to the crossbar. When installing the lamp onto mounting screws attached to the crossbar, thread the mounting base onto the two screws and secure the lantern to the wall with threaded nut caps that match the finish of the lantern.

6. Caulk around the lantern mounting base with clear silicone caulk to keep moisture from seeping behind the lantern and into the junction box.

7. Turn on the breaker inside your breaker panel that supplies electricity to the Hampton Bay exterior wall lantern.
