Ceiling tiles become stained by many things, including age, water or leaks, smoke, tar and nicotine as well as dirt and dust. Cleaning these stains can be tough if your tiles are made of Styrofoam or pressed paper. Always try to determine what type of ceiling tiles you have before beginning to clean, as this will save not only money to replace ruined tiles, but also time and energy. This can be done normally by taking down a tile and looking closely at the surface or backing.
Instructions
1. Take down the stained ceiling tiles you wish to clean from the railing or tracks they are secured on. Normally this can be done by simply pushing up on the center of the tile and pushing to one side. Then grab hold of the end of the tile and pull it down through the opening left by its absence.
2. Turn on the water in the shower and adjust the temperature to tepid or slightly warm. Place the ceiling tile into the shower area and allow the water to run down the stained area.
3. Rub the cleaning rag across the stained area gently, so as not to break the ceiling tile. Turn off the water and allow the tile to sit in the shower stall against a wall to drain completely. This can take as little as five minutes for foam tiles, or as long as two hours for cardboard backed tiles, in which case the shower should never be used.
4. Dry the tiles off with the dry towel and replace in the ceiling track where it was previously removed.
