Plan your basement remodel to avoid mistakes.
Basements with low ceilings may cause a headache when deciding on what remodeling techniques to include. Avoid possible complications by taking into account the amount of headroom you have in your basement. Light colors create an illusion of a larger room, while dark colors make a room appear smaller. You do not need to spend a small fortune to remodel your basement with a low ceiling; instead, changing a few items in the basement can give it a modern, clean appearance.
Instructions
1. Remove all items from the low ceiling basement. This ensures you have a clean working area for your basement remodel.
2. Paint the ceiling in your basement with ceiling paint, your paintbrush, paint roller and paint tray. Selecting white paint creates the look and feel of a larger, open airy basement. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before continuing onto the next step.
3. Apply mirrored tiles to the ceiling in your basement in a design of your choice according the manufacturer's directions. Adding mirrored tiles to the ceiling makes the ceiling appear taller. You may wish to apply mirrored tiles all over the ceiling or frame the ceiling in them. This depends upon your personal preference.
4. Paint the walls in your basement in a light color with your paintbrush, paint roller and paint tray. This remodels your basement walls.
5. Place area rugs on your basement floor. You do not have to replace the entire floor in order to remodel it.
6. Turn off the power to your basement at your home's main breaker box. Flip the switch marked "basement" to the off position.
7. Remove your basement's current light fixture according to the manufacturer's directions. Typically, unscrew the light fixture from the ceiling and untwist the color-coded wires.
8. Install a recessed light fixture according to the manufacturer's directions. Recessed light fixtures mount into the ceiling, giving you a flushed mounted light, which saves head room in a basement with a low ceiling.
9. Hang a variety of mirrors on the walls in your basement. This gives an illusion of a larger room.
