Take Lights Off Of A Fan

Ceiling fan light fixtures can be removed.

The majority of ceiling fans are supplied with light fixtures. Light kits for ceiling fans also are available separately, giving you the option of using the light kit that comes with the ceiling fan, adding a different ceiling fan light kit, or leaving the light kit off the ceiling fan altogether. Ceiling fans do not require lights to operate, so the lights can be removed and replaced to accommodate your changing decor.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electric power to the ceiling fan by turning off its breaker inside the main service panel.

2. Climb your ladder to the ceiling fan. Locate the switch housing that connects to the motor, directly beneath the fan blades. The fan lights attach to the switch housing cap that covers the wiring. Remove three to four screws that hold the wire housing cap to the ceiling fan.

3. Untwist the wire connectors that connect the fan light wires to the ceiling fan wires. This releases the fan lights from the ceiling fan.

4. Remove the nut that holds the nipple from the fan lights to the switch housing cap, using a pair of pliers. The nipple is a hollow, threaded tube that allows wires to pass from one location to another while joining parts of electrical lighting fixtures together.

5. Untwist the switch housing cap from the nipple. Plug the hole left in the cap by pushing in a knockout plug.

6. Find the wire connectors you removed earlier. Twist each one onto the bare wires inside the switch housing. Wrap electrical tape around the connectors to secure them to the wires.

7. Replace the switch housing cap. Secure it to the ceiling fan with the screws you removed previously.

8. Turn the breaker on inside the main electrical panel that supplies electricity to your ceiling fan.
