Remote control kits make it easy to convert your existing ceiling fan unit. Once the kit is installed, the fan may be controlled from anywhere within the specified range. The installation can be done in just a few minutes with minimal supplies. Most remote control receivers have six wires that must be connected. These wires are divided into a "fan" side and a "power" side for easy reference. The fan side has the hot, neutral and light kit wires. The power side has the hot, neutral and ground wires that connect to the home's power source.
Instructions
1. Turn off the power to the home at the main breaker.
2. Slide the fan canopy down to expose the wiring. Most fans have screws that hold the canopy in place.
3. Disconnect all of the wires leading from the fan into the ceiling. Twist the wire nut counter-clockwise to disconnect the black, or hot, wire that connects the fan to the power source. Fans with lights will have an additional wire connected to the black wires. This is the power for the light kit. Remove the wire nut connecting the white, or neutral, wires.
4. Strip 1 inch from the wires on the remote control receiver unit.
5. Attach the "power" side wires on the receiver to the wires coming from the ceiling. Insert the stripped end of the green ground wire and the end of the ground wire from the ceiling into a wire nut. Twist the nut clockwise to splice the wires together. Repeat this process for the black wires. Splice the white wires together in the same fashion.
6. Attach the "fan" side wires on the receiver to the corresponding wires from the fan with wire nuts. Insert the stripped ends of the white wires from the receiver and fan into a wire nut. Twist the nut clockwise to splice the wires together. Repeat this process with the black wires. Splice together the light kit wires using the same technique.
7. Push the wires into the canopy and secure the canopy in place with the mounting screws.
8. Put batteries in the remote control. Turn on the power at the main circuit breaker. Use the remote to control the fan and light.
