Hang A Bubble Chair Stand

A bubble chair hanging from the ceiling is quintessential modern decor.

Bubble chairs, or round wraparound chairs, have enjoyed many years of popularity as a fun example of modern home furnishing design. The space-age aesthetic of the bubble chair is heightened still further if you have a hanging stand for your bubble chair, allowing the chair to be suspended from the ceiling. Fortunately, you can install your hanging bubble chair stand yourself, with just a few common household tools. A hanging bubble chair is a good choice for any part of the house with an open, airy floorplan.

Instructions

1. Ask a friend to hold the bubble chair stand at the desired height. Measure the distance between the top of your hanging bubble chair stand and the ceiling, using a stepladder.

2. Purchase a length of heavy-gauge chain cut to fit this measurement minus 6 inches to account for additional hardware. Check that the chain is rated to support the weight of the chair plus 250 pounds.

3. Find a ceiling joist with a stud finder. If you have a textured ceiling, place a piece of cardstock between the stud finder and the ceiling to improve the accuracy of the reading. Move the stud finder in methodical rows until a joist is located. Use the stud finder to determine the center of the joist, and mark this point with a pencil.

4. Attach a 3/8-inch drill bit to a drill, and drill directly up at the marked point. Wear safety glasses during this step to keep falling dust from irritating your eyes. Drill to a depth of about 5 inches.

5. Insert a 7/16-inch-diameter eye lag screw into the pre-drilled hole, and tighten until the top of the eye is even with the ceiling.

6. Hang an S-hook from the eye screw, and suspend the length of chain from the S-hook.

7. Hang a second S-hook from the bottom of the chain, and hang the bubble chair stand from this S-hook.
