Convert Hanging Ceiling Fan To Ceiling Hugger

Moving the ceiling fan closer to the ceiling makes the room feel more spacious.

Most ceiling fans that hang from a down rod can be converted to a ceiling hugger by removing the down rod. For optimum air flow, you should use the smallest down rod included with your fan. Understandably, some areas don't allow for much room between the ceiling fan blades and the furniture (or humans) below, and you can't use even the smallest down rod. Following some simple steps will allow you to convert your ceiling fan to hug the ceiling, giving you plenty of headroom below.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the ceiling fan at the breaker panel. If you are not sure which breaker operates the ceiling fan, you can turn the fan on and then turn off the breakers one by one until the fan is no longer operating.

2. Remove the fan blades. Take the blades and the arms off of the ceiling fan at the motor and do not leave the fan blade arms attached because you do not want to bend them when you set the ceiling fan down on your work surface.

3. Unscrew the canopy housing from the hanger bracket. The canopy housing covers the hanger bracket at the ceiling and will be held on by at least four screws, two on each side of the canopy.

4. Disconnect the ceiling fan from the power supply. Remove the wire nuts from the black wires and from the white wires and move the ceiling fan to a stable work area.

5. Remove the down rod from the ceiling fan. The down rod will be held in place by a cotter pin through a small shaft that holds it to the down rod collar. Removing the cotter pin and sliding the shaft out will release the down rod from the fan motor housing. The down rod may also be held in place by set screws. If your fan is manufactured in this manner, you need to remove the set screws and unscrew the down rod from the collar.

6. Attach the canopy housing to the ceiling fan. There will be four to six screws around the outside of the down rod collar that are screwed directly into the motor housing. Remove these screws and set the canopy housing on top of the ceiling fan. Line up the holes in the canopy housing with the holes in the motor housing. Install the screws through the holes in the canopy housing and into the motor housing.

7. Reconnect the ceiling fan to the power supply. Connect the two white wires together with the wire nut and connect the black wires together in the same manner. Gently push the wires back into the electrical box in the ceiling.

8. Attach the canopy housing to the hanger bracket. Make sure when you attach the canopy housing to the bracket that you tighten the screws securely.

9. Reattach the ceiling fan blades to the fan and turn the power back on at the panel.
