Replace The Wall Switch For A Ceiling Fan

The wall switch for a ceiling fan works in exactly the same way as the wall switch for a light. The switch is wired into the circuit, interrupting the flow of power when you turn the switch off. If your switch is no longer working properly, or if you simply want a different style of switch, replacing it is relatively easy. Make sure to get a replacement switch that's the same size as the old one.

Instructions

1. Cut electricity to the existing wall switch at the house circuit box. Remove the switch plate by taking out the screw at the center of it, exposing the switch. Remove the switch by taking out the screws at the top and bottom of the unit. Pull it out from the wall so it's hanging on its wires. Note the configuration of the wires on the switch, so you can wire the new switch in the same way. In most cases, there will be two black wires wrapped around receptor screws at the top and bottom of the switch, and a bare ground copper connected to a green ground screw.

2. Disconnect the wires by loosening the screws that hold them in place.

3. Position the replacement switch near the electrical box. Connect the two black wires to the receptor screws at the top and bottom of the switch. Wrap the wire ends clockwise around the screws and tighten them. Connect the bare ground wire to the green ground screw, and tighten it.

4. Cover the connections in electrician's tape, wrapping it around the edge of the switch.

5. Tuck the switch and wires back into the box. Secure the switch to the box with the provided screws.

6. Secure the new switch plate. Turn the power back on.
