Install Ceiling Speaker Layouts

Wiring ceiling speakers provides quality and visually unobtrusive sound.

Ceiling speakers are used for a variety of applications. Whether used to distribute sound throughout the home, or as speakers anchoring a home theater, ceiling speakers are designed to sound good without being seen. Wiring ceiling speakers can be challenging however, given the need to gain access to attics and chase spaces. Once completed, discreet appearance and quality sound can be enjoyed.

Instructions

1. Cut a 2 by 2 inch rectangular hole in the ceiling at the meeting point of the ceiling and a wall for a wire to be fed through. Cut an additional hole at the base of the wall.

2. Feed fish tape through the top hole and through the hole in the ceiling and behind the wall. Extend it through the bottom hole in the wall.

3. Attach the fish wire and speaker wire by wrapping 2 to 3 loops of electrical tape over the speaker wire and fish tape. Pull the wire back through the wall, and behind the header into the space above the room.

4. Unwrap the tape around the fish tape and speaker wire so you can carry the coiled tape into the attic or crawlspace.

5. Hold the template included with the ceiling speaker against the ceiling with one hand, while cutting around the template with the other. Make these cuts with the drywall saw.

6. Find the best access point into the attic or crawlspace. Cautiously enter this space, only putting body weight on crossbeams or rafters. Grab the wire that is protruding into this space.

7. Tape the end of the wire once again to the end of the fish tape. Extend the tape and wire to the hole in the ceiling.

8. Pull the wire through the speaker opening in the ceiling.

9. Place the ceiling speaker into the hole and attach the wire to it.

10. Patch the wall by using the scissors to cut a piece of metal or fiberglass drywall piece to cover the cuts in the wall. Spread drywall compound over the patches with a putty knife. Sand the compound after it dries, repeating as necessary to blend the patches into the wall. Paint the patches as desired.
