Do A Swirl Pattern On A Ceiling With Sand Paint

Adding texture to your ceiling is a way to add dimension to any room in your home. A swirl texture can make a small room seem larger by drawing the eyes upward to the design. Sand can be added to the finish paint for additional texture to your ceiling paint. You can add a swirl pattern with sand paint in an afternoon without calling in a professional painter.

Instructions

1. Sweep across your ceiling with a broom to remove any cobwebs or dust.

2. Run a line of painters tape along the top of each wall where it meets the ceiling. This will prevent paint from getting on the walls while you are painting.

3. Add sand to your paint in small amounts until you get the desired texture. Start by adding approximately a cup of sand for every gallon of paint. Stir the paint with a paint stick. Paint a practice stroke on a scrap piece of plywood. Add additional amounts of sand in half-cup increments until you reach the desired texture. If you prefer, you can purchase paint that already has sand texture added to it.

4. Hold your paintbrush at the base of the handle at the top of the brush. Dip the brush approximately half way down the bristles into the paint. Wipe both sides of the brush on the side of the paint bucket to remove the excess paint.

5. Apply your first swirl in one corner on the ceiling of your room. Paint a rainbow shape or a half a circle in one continuous stroke on the ceiling. Re-dip your brush into the paint and apply your next swirl. Overlap the next swirl approximately a half-inch to cover the edge of the first swirl.

6. Continue down the ceiling until you reach the top of the opposite wall. Begin your second row. Overlap the top of the new row with the bottom of the second row. Each stroke should overlap. Continue adding swirls until the entire ceiling has been painted.

7. Add paint with a brush in the corners and any areas that did not get painted between the swirls.

8. Wait overnight for the paint to dry and remove the painters tape.
