Light Fixtures For A Southwesternstyle Home

Light Fixtures for a Southwestern-Style Home

Southwestern style is a popular motif for home decorating. It incorporates the old West with Native American designs originating in the southwestern United States. Along with painting the walls in desert colors, adding the right lighting fixtures can pull together the decorating scheme. Lighting fixtures do more than illuminate a room, they set the tone.

Southwestern Lighting Fixtures

As with other styles of lighting fixtures, those with a southwestern flair come in a variety of fixture designs. There are wall-mounted sconces, ceiling fixtures and hanging fixtures to consider. Furthermore, you might use a light with a built-in ceiling fan, as fans are popular in the Southwest.

Wall sconces can be found made of metal or ceramic. They typically have cutouts in designs ranging from desert scenes, to Native American designs, to images of cowboys or tribal characters, such as Kokopelli. Light pours through the cut-uts, making shadows and images on the wall beside it. Some sconces are more bowl-shaped in design, painted in desert hues, with or without additional tribal patterns. These sconces can be mounted in a variety of positions. For basic room illumination, they can be mounted bowl-end up to cast the light upward. To illuminate a work of art below them, they can be mounted bowl-end downward. And, if your home has architectural interest, such as arches, they can be mounted sideways to illuminate the home feature.

Simple ceiling fixtures, much like the sconces in design, can be found and mounted in the center of rooms. Or, for over tables or hanging in the entry, you can display a Southwestern chandelier or pendant fixture. Bowl pendants are popular, in which a glass bowl is suspended and set in a metal band that usually contains cut-outs or is embossed with native designs. The bowls tend to be in creamy or amber colors and the metal tends toward copper or bronze, although some with patina finish can be found. Other popular pendants have a simple canister-shape. These metal canisters have cutouts and an inset lens, available in many desert hues.

Track lighting can also be found in which the track light can is made in the same, cutout motif as metal wall sconces and pendant chandeliers. As well, bathroom lighting fixtures are available. With all the choices available, an entire house can be lit in Southwestern style, or just one room.
