A universal remote control can be added to most ceiling fans.
Adding a control to a swagged ceiling fan can be done by either plugging it into a switched outlet or adding a remote control kit. Most rooms in homes today have a switched outlet for lights, usually identified by being installed upside down when compared to the rest of the outlets in the room. The outlet has two sockets, and usually only half of the outlet (one socket) is switched, most likely the top socket. If the room has a ceiling light it may not have a switched outlet and your only option will be to add a remote control ceiling fan kit.
Instructions
1. Purchase a ceiling fan remote kit that is compatible with your model and brand of fan. You won't need a kit with a wall switch, since there are none. Some kits are available with just the remote control and the remote receiver, which is all you need.
2. Unplug the fan's swag chain cord from the outlet. Remove the canopy at the top of the fan against the ceiling. Disconnect all of the wires in the canopy.
3. Attach all of the green and bare copper wires together, including the one from the receiver module. The receiver module that came with the remote control fan kit has two sets of wires. A white and a black wire should be marked line or line side. Connect the line side white wire from the module to the swag chain's silver wire. Connect the line side black wire from the module to the swag chain's copper wire.
4. Slide the module into the fan's hanger bracket. Sometimes things can get tight when installing a remote module, especially with a swagged fan since there is no electrical box for your connections. You may have to shift the wires and wire nuts around to get the cover back on when finished. By inserting the module into the bracket you can avoid the following connections from getting in your way.
5. Connect the remaining white wire from the module to the white wire going into the fan. Connect the remaining black wire from the module to the black wire going into the fan. If your fan has a light kit, attach the blue wire from the module to the red or blue wire going into your fan. If your fan doesn't have a light kit, put a wire nut on the blue wire from the module for safety.
6. Replace the cover over the module and connections. Plug the cord back in.
