A tray ceiling is one where the primary central part of the ceiling is taller than a raised area around the edges. This design detail adds architectural interest to the home, but it can make trimming the effected area a little problematic. Take advantage of the uneven ceiling to give your room a brand-new look. There are several ways to trim a tray ceiling, so choose a method that is in line with your decorating goals and your needs.
Instructions
1. Paint the vertical part of your tray ceiling the same color as the wall while leaving the horizontal part of it white. This sandwiches a stripe of color between the white of the ceiling and the white of the horizontal part of the tray ceiling. The stripe of color is subtle or vibrant, depending on where you are standing, and this is a simple way to add a touch of trim in pure color to the ceiling.
2. Tack strips of molding to both 90-degree corners of the tray ceiling using a hammer and nails. You may choose to match the strips of molding to each other, or you may choose two different types of molding. One way to create a staggered effect is to lay a tall elaborate molding against the higher part of the ceiling while laying a thinner, simpler strip of molding on the lower part.
3. Apply a wallpaper border to the vertical portion of the tray ceiling. This vertical strip is in an ideal place for some color and design, and a strip of wallpaper that is sized to the height of the vertical strip gives it some visual interest. Use a pastel border with animals or nursery rhyme characters on it for a child's room, or use a dramatic border with strong colors and patterns for a living room. You can also choose a border with western images or with classic Greek images for a themed room.
