Occasionally, a ceiling fan, whether old or new, may need to be uninstalled for repairs or replacement. At first glance this task may appear intimidating, however, you'll need only a second pair of hands to make this quick project go even quicker. Even a first-timer should be able to perform this removal provided they have the right tools.
Instructions
1. Turn off the main switch at the circuit breaker box or fuse box located in the utility room or basement to power off the entire home or the room where you will be working. Flip the switch that controls the ceiling fan off and on a few times to test the fixture and make sure it is off.
2. Remove the light bulbs, globes or any other decorative fixtures that are on the ceiling fan. Press one of your hands against the ceiling while you take out the mounting nuts or screws that attach the ceiling fan fixture to the ceiling using a wrench or screwdriver.
3. Look to see if the wires are color-coded, and if they aren't, use a marker or some form of tape to label each of the wires (for example, identifying which wire is for the light switch) for later reference. Remove the wire nuts or electrical tape to disconnect the wiring. Take the ceiling fan down to the floor.
4. Put some wire nuts or electrical tape on the ends of the bare wires and tuck them away in the ceiling out of the way of others until you are ready to reinstall a ceiling fan or light fixture.
