How Long Does Interior Paint Take To Dry

How Long Does Interior Paint Take to Dry?

Latex (Water-Based) Paints

When applied at room temperature in average humidity, latex paint will be dry to the touch in about 1 hour. A second coat can generally be applied after 4 hours.

Oil-Based Paints

Oil paints take considerably longer to dry than latex paint. When applied at room temperature in average humidity, oil-based paints may be dry to the touch in 8 hours; however, it can take 24 hours or more before a second coat can be applied.

Methods to Speed Drying Time

Warm, dry air will result in the fastest drying time. Choose a day with no precipitation, low humidity and high temperatures. A dehumidifier may also be used.

Sufficient ventilation and airflow will also aid the drying process. Open windows, ceiling fans and oscillating fans are all beneficial.

Do not apply a second coat of paint as soon as the first feels dry to the touch. Wait the full amount of time recommended on the paint can before reapplying, or the finished walls will not dry adequately.
