Hang A Punching Bag From Ceiling Joists

Your punching bag hanger must endure great weight and shock.

Exposed ceiling joists provide a convenient mounting point for hanging a punching bag, but some care must be taken in how you proceed. If you use an eye-bolt as a hanger and mount it incorrectly or put too much weight on the eye-bolt, the bolt could rip out of the joist or even crack the joist apart. The best solution -- as well as the only one for heavy bags weighing 100 lbs. or more -- is to use a joist hanger. This spreads the weight of the heavy bag, as well as the shock from its use, to two joists.

Instructions

1. Place a joist hanger between the rafters above the space where you want to hang the punching bag. Set the hanger up so it is flush with the ceiling and the joists on either side. Mark the joists with a pencil, paint pen or marker through the bolt holes of the hanger.

2. Select a drill bit the same size as the bolts that came with the hanger kit, install that into your drill and drill out the holes as marked in the joists.

3. Put the hanger back into position between the joists and push the bolts through the holes and the joists. Place washers over the bolts and set the washers flush against the side of the joists. Thread nuts onto the bolts and tighten them, first by hand and then finishing with a crescent wrench.

4. Hook a heavy bag spring to the eye-loop on the hanger if you are using a heavy bag, hook the spring onto the chains from the heavy bag. If you are attaching a double-end bag to the hanger, hook the bag's top bungee through the eye-loop without a spring.
