Replace A Pullchain Light

Single socket pull-chain lights, often referred to as keyless fixtures (incorrectly), are commonly made of porcelain but also available in plastic. Some pull-chain lights also contain receptacles. A keyless fixture is a user-controlled light operated by a wall switch, so a true keyless fixture does not contain a pull-chain. Single socket pull-chain lights are often found in closets, attics and garages. No prior electrical wiring knowledge is required to replace a pull-chain light fixture.

Instructions

1. Turn off the breaker supplying electricity to the pull-chain light inside the main breaker box. Verify there is no power present in the socket by use of a non-contact voltage tester.

2. Remove the two screws holding the pull-chain light to the ceiling electrical box. Pull the fixture from the ceiling to expose the wires. Check all the wires contained in the electrical box with a non-contact voltage tester to verify there is no power present. If power still exists, try turning off more breakers. If all else fails turn off the main breaker.

3. Loosen the two screws on the back of the pull-chain light fixture and remove the black and white wires from beneath them. Discard the original pull-chain light.

4. When attaching hooked solid wires around screw terminals make sure to wrap the wires clockwise. Wrap the black wire around the brass terminal screw on the back of the replacement pull-chain light. Wrap the white wire around the silver terminal screw on the back of the pull-chain light.

5. Attach the replacement pull-chain light to the electrical box with the screws you removed in Step 2. Turn on the breaker supplying electricity to the pull-chain light inside the breaker box.
