Attach A Ceiling Fan To The Center Of A Cathedral Ceiling

A ceiling fan increases the flow of air in your room and can help decrease the cost of heating or cooling. Because hot air rises, you can lose a lot of heat near the ceiling if you have a cathedral ceiling. Increased airflow from a ceiling fan during the summer also helps with air conditioning costs.

Instructions

1. Measure the height of your cathedral ceiling at the center peak and measure to the floor. The height of your ceiling will determine the length of the down-rod you need to install the ceiling fan. A down-rod is used to drop a ceiling fan from the ceiling down to the livable space in your room. If the center peak of your cathedral ceiling is higher than 15 feet, a down-rod of 72 inches is recommended. Remember that the blades of the ceiling fan should be at least 7 feet from the floor for safety reasons.

2. Install a ceiling fan fixture box in the center of the peak of your cathedral ceiling. Measure more than once to make sure the fixture box is installed in the center of your ceiling or rafters. The ceiling fan fixture box is used to place the ceiling fan in the center of the ceiling, instead of using a board that spans the peak. A fixture box is much easier to install than a board that requires cutting and fitting.

3. Attach the down-rod and base of the ceiling fan to the fixture box, following directions. Make sure the wires for the ceiling fan are long enough to reach through the down-rod to the ceiling fan. Once the down-rod is secure, wire the ceiling fan according to directions.

4. Buy a remote control for your ceiling fan, especially if it's installed in a cathedral ceiling. Make sure the ceiling fan you buy has a remote control option to avoid climbing a ladder to turn the fan off and on, or change the direction of air flow.
