Changing Ceiling Vents In Basements To Registers

Registers give you more control than standard vents.

HVAC vents allow air from a home's heating and cooling system to enter the living space. They can be located on the floor, on the wall or on the ceiling. An HVAC vent in the ceiling is known as a diffuser. A register is a diffuser that has a damper that allows you to control airflow by opening and closing the vent. Replacing a standard vent with a register is a do-it-yourself task that requires basic mechanical skills and tools.

Instructions

1. Measure the vent and register to make sure they are the same size. Test the damper by flipping the damper lever back and forth to make sure it opens and closes. Do not install a damper that does not work properly.

2. Hold your other hand beneath the ceiling vent to catch it after the screws have been removed. Unscrew the two retaining screws from the register.

3. Push any insulation aside so that the hole is clear of any obstruction.

4. Hold a register up to the hole so that the damper is in the ceiling and the grille of the vent is flat against the ceiling.

5. Drive a retaining screw into each of the screw holes at the ends of the register until the register is tight against the ceiling.

6. Retest with the damper lever to make sure the damper opens and closes properly.
