Soundproof A Ceiling Cheap

The simplest way to soundproof a ceiling is to add more mass to it. You can do this with a variety of materials. One of the most effective yet inexpensive ways of doing so is by adding a mass-loaded vinyl barrier to the ceiling. This type of material has the ability to stop sound more effectively than lead and can be easily cut to fit the dimensions of your ceiling. You'll find mass-loaded vinyl offered by a variety of manufacturers.

Instructions

1. Cut the mass-loaded vinyl barrier to fit the width and length of the ceiling you want to soundproof.

2. Staple the mass loaded vinyl barrier to the ceiling, starting on one side of the space and overlapping each sheet by 1 or 2 inches. Cover the entire ceiling with this material.

3. Screw wooden strips, also known as furring strips, through the mass-loaded vinyl and into the ceiling joists above. Screw these strips into the ceiling perpendicular to the ceiling joists. Spread these strips across your ceiling, spacing them out a few feet from each other.

4. Attach drywall to these furring strips to create a new ceiling.

5. Use an acoustic sealant to soundproof the edges of the new layer of drywall.
