Remove Ceiling Medallions

Ceiling medallions can add a touch of class to an otherwise bland ceiling. These large circular fixtures consist of wood or plastic and mount on the ceiling. A hole in the middle of the medallion allows electrical wiring to be passed go through for wiring a light or ceiling fan. However, if the ceiling medallions in your house or apartment aren't suited to your tastes, you can remove them yourself.

Instructions

1. Place a drop cloth on the floor underneath the ceiling medallion to catch any dust or debris. Set the ladder underneath the ceiling medallion.

2. Turn off the electricity to the electrical fixture, if present, mounted through the medallion. Turn off the light switch that controls the fixture, and then tape this in place so that no one accidentally turns it on. Alternately, cut the power for the fixture at the main circuit breaker.

3. Disconnect any fan blades if there is a ceiling fan present beneath the medallion using a screwdriver to unscrew the screws next to the fan hub.

4. Put on work gloves. Use a sharp utility knife to cut away the caulk between the edge of the ceiling medallion and the ceiling.

5. Insert the edge of a putty knife between the medallion and the ceiling. Gently hammer this in between the medallion and the ceiling. Slowly work your way around the edge, prying the medallion away from the ceiling.

6. Use a heat gun if you aren't able to pry the medallion away with the putty knife. Fire up the gun and gently wave it around the medallion, slowly working your way around the medallion in a full circle. Continue trying to loosen the medallion with the putty knife as you apply heat.

7. Cut up the ceiling medallion with a rotary tool to remove it.
