Rustic Kitchen Lighting Ideas

A rustic kitchen can have a welcoming, almost romantic feel to it when it is decorated correctly. One of the keys for showing off the rustic features of a kitchen and for casting the proper mood is good, appropriate lighting. No one way exists to light a rustic kitchen, but several types of lighting work better than others.

Pendant Lighting

Many pendant lights can help create the proper rustic ambiance, but carefully choose the kind of pendant lights to hang, as not all pendant lights are rustic in nature. Choose ones that employ cast iron or brass metal used in thick strips, along with thicker pieces of glass. Larger lights, too, can provide the right feel. Wagon wheel-style chandeliers are also a good choice in a rustic kitchen.

Wall Sconces

Like torches hung from the wall of an ancient castle, wall sconces can lend a rustic feel to a kitchen. Choose ones that allow the entire light bulb to be concealed in frosted glass so that it can mimic the appearance of a candle. Delicate sconces provide the opposite effect of a rustic kitchen. Instead choose heavier, thicker ones.

Spot and Track Lights

Although spot and track lights built into the underside of cabinets or into the ceiling might seem like they are exclusive for modern or otherwise contemporary kitchen designs, they can be used to good effect in a rustic kitchen as well. Use lights with a warmer, yellowish cast to give the kitchen a glowing look, and include lights to illuminate the best detail work in your kitchen from good, rustic tile work on a backsplash to dark wood cabinet fronts.
