Lights That Work With Drop Ceilings

A pendant light is an ideal way to dress up a drop ceiling.

A drop ceiling is one of the most budget-friendly options for finishing a ceiling. As its name implies, the system consists of a metal grip that is "dropped" below the structural ceiling surface to hold ceiling tiles in place. Because there is space between the structural ceiling and dropped ceiling, you can easily hide pipes, wires and ductwork in there. The space above the ceiling tiles also allows you to use several lighting options since most fixtures can be fitted into the tiles or anchored to structural supports above the drop ceiling. You can choose the fixtures that best meet your lighting needs.

Fluorescent Lights

Fluorescent lights are the most common lighting option used with drop ceilings. The fixtures are actually part of the ceiling surface as the light replaces one of the tiles. The bulb is set beneath a plastic panel that diffuses the light for a softer effect. You can choose a white, translucent or clear panel to cover the fluorescent bulb depending on your preference. While fluorescent lights offer a practical, budget-friendly lighting option for your drop ceiling, they can sometimes have a sterile look that isn't pleasing to the room's aesthetics.

Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting is another traditional lighting option for a drop ceiling. The fixtures are installed so they are flush with the surface of the ceiling's panels. As a result, only the fixture's trim is visible. Most recessed lighting fixtures are round, but you can also find square and rectangular options. You may scatter several recessed lights across your drop ceiling to serve as general lighting for the room or concentrate a few fixtures in a small area to provide task lighting for reading or doing other activities.

Track Lighting

If you want a versatile lighting option for your drop ceiling, track lighting is an ideal choice. The fixtures consist of several light heads mounted to the ceiling on a single track. You can rotate and tilt the individual heads to concentrate their light in a specific area of the room. Like recessed lighting, track lighting works as both general and task lighting. However, it is also ideal if you have artwork or an architectural feature that you would like to showcase since you can direct a light to shine directly on your chosen focal point.

Pendant Light

Pendant lights are the most decorative lighting option for a drop ceiling. The fixtures are suspended from the ceiling so they hang down into the room. They usually feature shades that come in a variety of colors, styles and shapes, so you can find an option that complements the rest of your room's décor. A pedant light is ideal for hanging over a dining table or game table because it provide direct, focused light. However, you can also install one in the center of your drop ceiling to serve as an attractive focal point.
