Install Surround Sound Speakers In A Twostory House

Although it requires time and effort, you can install surround sound speakers yourself.

If you've recently purchased surround sound speakers for your entertainment system, you might be surprised to learn that you can install them yourself. The installation will take a little time, effort and concentration, but you can do it just as easily as a technician, as long as you follow certain steps. You will need to make some adjustments if you're installing your surround sound speakers in a two-story home.

Instructions

1. Choose whether you want your surround sound speakers on the first or second floor of your home. This decision will come into play later when you are wiring your speakers.

2. Decide where you want each speaker to go. Measure the speakers, and then measure the same dimensions in the area on the wall. Many speakers come with a template you can use to mark the mounting locations on your walls. Use a pencil to mark on the wall in case you have to erase your marks and start over in another spot. You do not want the speakers to hit any studs, so use a stud finder to make sure there are none in the locations where you wish to install the speakers.

3. Drill a hole in the wall directly behind your entertainment system. The speaker wires will need to be pulled through the wall and ceiling and attached to the back of the entertainment system. If you have drywall, you can use a twist bit, which is the most common type of drill bit. If you are drilling into a brick, stone, concrete or tile wall, use a masonry drill bit.

4. Use fish tape if you are installing speakers on the first floor. Attach the speaker wire to the fish tape, and run the wire from the speaker location through the ceiling and down to the wall directly behind your entertainment system. If you wish to install your speakers on the second floor and you have an attic, you can run the speaker wire through the attic and then down to the wall behind your system. If you do not have an attic, you will have to install the speakers on the first floor, as there will be no place on the second floor to run your speaker wire through to the entertainment system.

5. Finish wiring the speakers and make sure the wires are all located at the back of your entertainment system.

6. Consult your instruction manual on hook up your speakers once you have them all wired and placed in the wall. The hook-up process will vary, depending on what kind of speaker system you have.
