Grants For Students In The Fine Arts

Students wishing to study art at the college or university level will find many grant programs available to them to help finance their education. Many leading art schools offer grant programs special to their institution, while most all participate in state and federal grant programs on behalf of their students. Grants for students in the fine arts are accessed through the financial aid office of their school. Most financial aid offices require that applicants complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for grant programs.

School of Visual Arts

The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City offers programs covering the full range of fine and commercial arts as well as the new media. The school offers their SVA grant program for full-time students. Eligibility and award amounts are based on student financial need and are determined by the office of financial aid. SVA students are eligible to apply for grant funds through the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), a need-based grant for full-time students who are New York residents.

Rhode Island School of Design

The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) offers grant and scholarship funds yearly to more than one-third of the student body for academic and artistic excellence. RISD students may also complete the FAFSA to determine eligibility for state and federal grant programs. GS Grants are open to RISD graduate students of good academic standing in the categories of design, architecture and fine arts.

CalArts

CalArts in Valencia, California is a leading art school in the greater Los Angeles area. Programs are available in traditional studio arts as well as in digital media and movie making. CalArts students are eligible for Cal Grants, a state grant program for California residents who meet requirements which include a ceiling on family income and assets. Federal Pell Grants and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) are also available to CalArts students. Pell Grants are based on financial need, with an annual maximum grant of $5,550 in 2011. Students must complete the FAFSA application each year to be eligible for these grants.

University of Washington

Many state universities offer outstanding programs of studies in the arts such as the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. Art students at these institutions apply for grants and financial aid packages by completing a FAFSA application and checking with the university financial aid office for grant opportunities. UW art students are eligible for federal Pell Grants and state-need grants for Washington residents. Check with your state university system for art departments and visit their financial aid office to inquire about grant opportunities.
