Install a ceiling fan with two switches and a remote to make the operation of your ceiling fan more convenient. Rather than have to operate the ceiling fan from two wall switches, you can bypass one of the switches and operate the ceiling fan from the comfort of your couch or bed. The remote will change the speed of your fan, turn off and on the lights, turn off and on the fan, and even dim the lights on the fan.
Instructions
1. Disconnect the power to the room that you are installing your fan in. Turn off the breaker at the main panel.
2. Assemble your ceiling fan according to the manufacturer's instructions. Leave off one fan blade; it will physically give you more room when you are wiring the ceiling fan to the ceiling fan box.
3. Locate the wires that connect to the switches. You have four wires to your ceiling fan box from the two switches. The colors and designation of the wires are, red(hot), black(hot), white(neutral) and bare copper(ground). Each hot wire connects to an individual switch. You will need to cap off one of the hot wires as it is no longer necessary to have two switches when you install a remote receiver to your ceiling fan. There will not be a location on the receiver to wire the extra hot.
4. Cap off one of the hot wires in the ceiling fan box. Use an orange wire nut and twist it onto the red or the black wire and secure the wire nut with electrical tape. It will not matter which hot wire you cap off, the red wire or the black can be used to power the ceiling fan.
5. Attach the hanger bracket to the ceiling fan box. The hanger bracket will attach with two screws that were provided with your ceiling fan.
6. Hang fan temporarily on the installation hook that is attached to the ceiling fan bracket. This hook is provided by manufacturers in order for you to be able to work hands free.
7. Wire the ceiling fan remote receiver to the remaining wires in the ceiling fan box. Connect the remaining hot wire from the ceiling fan box to the black wire labeled power supply on the receiver by twisting an orange wire nut onto the wires. Connect the white wire from the ceiling fan box to the white wire on the receiver using an orange wire nut. Connect the black wire from the ceiling fan motor to the black wire labeled ceiling fan on the receiver using an orange wire nut. Connect the wire from the ceiling fan motor labeled light kit to the wire on the receiver labeled light kit using an orange wire nut.
8. Push all wires and the receiver into the ceiling fan box and connect the ceiling fan to the hanging bracket. The ceiling fan has four screws that attach it to the hanging bracket. Install the remaining fan blade.
9. Turn on the breaker at the main panel to power the ceiling fan.
