Repair A Popping Noise In A Ceiling Fan

An unbalanced ceiling fan can make popping and clicking noises.

If your ceiling fan is making a rhythmic popping noise as it runs, watch it closely and you'll probably notice a slight wobble. Popping noises in ceiling fans often indicate the fan is out of balance, which makes the motor housing bump against the ceiling bracket. Balancing a ceiling fan is a matter of trial and error in determining which blade needs the extra weight.

Instructions

1. Turn the fan off. Set up your ladder under the fan. Climb up to the fan and wipe off the tops of the blades with a dry cotton cloth.

2. Lay a 4-inch piece of duct tape on a work surface, with the sticky side up. Stick six pennies onto the tape.

3. Go back up to the fan. Press the tape onto the top of any one of the blades, two or three inches in from the end.

4. Turn the fan on and watch it. If noise and wobbling is lessened but still happening, add another strip of tape with four pennies to the same blade. If the noise and wobbling is worse, remove the pennies from the blade and move them to the next blade.

5. Turn on the fan and watch it again. Repeat the process, using trial and error to determine the proper position and number of the pennies.
