Convert A Chevy 327 Electric Fan

Replacing the mechanical fan on your 327 can free up horsepower.

Swapping your engine driven cooling fan for an electric fan is one of the most versatile upgrades you can perform on your car. By replacing the engine driven fan and clutch assembly, you reduce the amount of drag on the engine significantly. Additionally, with proper fan selection, you can increase the amount of air being drawn into the engine compartment to help cool the engine more completely.

Instructions

1. Unbolt the fan shroud from the top of the core support as well as the two retaining bolts which attach the upper fan shroud to the lower fan shroud. Remove the upper fan shroud and set it aside, then disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Unbolt the fan clutch from the front of the fan and remove it from the engine compartment. Three to four additional bolts attach the mechanical cooling fan to the water pump pulley. Remove these and extract the cooling fan from the engine compartment. Do not attempt to remove the water pump pulley.

3. Unbolt the lower fan shroud from the bottom of the core support and discard it.

4. Install the electrical cooling fan against the radiator using the mounts supplied with the fan. There will be three wires running from the fan.

5. Separate the wires and bolt the black ground wire to a clean, unpainted ground somewhere on the core support. Run the power wire to the fuse box and then locate the ignition fuse. Unbolt the fuse box from the frame of the car, and match the ignition fuse to the corresponding wiring located on the bottom side of the fuse box.

6. Splice the electrical fan power wire into the ignition wire and then bolt the fuse box back into place against the frame and replace the fuse box cover. Mount the wires out of the way against the core support so that they are not damaged by moving or heated items.

7. Install the third wire, which is a thermostat, onto the radiator hose with a metal compression band included with the kit, then run the wire so that there is no danger of the wire catching in moving parts of the engine. You can now reattach the negative battery terminal.
