Install Kinetic Art

A kinetic goose mobile is designed to capture the movement of birds in flight.

Kinetic art depends on motion to operate and deliver the full effect of the art. Often, a small piece might include a mobile for a baby's crib or a wind chime. Larger kinetic pieces can be installed outside in areas with frequent wind or in large rooms where the piece can be showcased. Usually, a kinetic art piece involves motion coupled to other elements such as water, sound and motion. Installing the art requires precision.

Instructions

1. Install simple mobile-style kinetic sculptures by finding a position in a room where the mobile can move without encountering obstructions. Homes with vaulted or two-story ceilings often have locations above the touch of residents and away from open doors or windows.

2. Measure the dimensions of the space and the width of the artwork. Position the artwork with additional space between the art and any surface. This prevents the art from swaying into the surface such as when a door is opened suddenly. It is usually OK for the art to sway slightly, but not violently.

3. Install ceiling hangers in the weight load described on the packaging. Any ceiling hanger should be mounted directly into a ceiling joist, and the hanger should exceed the expected weight of the art piece. Some art pieces have additional installation requirements -- such as electrical and water sources -- that must also be addressed during installation. Usually this type of artwork will be installed by the artist.

4. Install wall-mounted kinetic art, such as roller ball sculptures, using the brackets provided by the artist. This type of art will require precise leveling during the installation so that the balls operate exactly as designed. Usually, the artist will oversee larger installations or provide detailed instructions on check the level of the piece during installation.

5. Position stand-alone kinetic art in locations where it will not be touched by children or other people. Usually, this type of art will require a level floor surface, and the piece may be mounted by brackets or other techniques. Some art is mounted outside where the operational elements are well above touch range. These can be heavy pieces that require commercial installation techniques.
