Diy Chandelier Installation

A chandelier is the perfect lighting solution for any high-vaulted ceiling, such as in a foyer or entryway. And whether it's more for display purposes or for functionality, there is a wide range of chandeliers available to choose from on the market. The trouble most homeowners face is when it comes time to install it. Chandelier installation is actually easy, and if you have someone willing to give you a hand, it's even easier. Here is install a chandelier in your home (without having to call an electrician).

Tools You Will Need

Installing a chandelier is just like installing any other light fixture with one exception---chandeliers are very heavy! For this reason, it is critical that you purchase a chandelier hanging bracket from your local home improvement store. This bracket spans from joist to joist in the ceiling and they're made to help manage the weight of the fixture. Never install a chandelier without one of these brackets.

Other tools you need to complete this job include:

Screwdrivers

Wire strippers

Voltage tester

Wire connectors

Electrical tape

Ladder

Prep Work

If there is already a junction box in the ceiling, you may have to remove it so you can install the hanging bracket. Use the voltage tester to make sure that the circuit is off before starting any work.

Set the ladder up so that the junction box is slightly in front of the ladder. You do not want to position it directly under the box. Proper positioning of the ladder will help the installation go much smoother and easier.

If the chandelier is heavy and you have someone helping you, make sure she has her own ladder. Do not have her climb up the opposite side of your ladder. If your helper holds the chandelier while you make the connections, the installation can be finished in no time.

Preassemble the chandelier before installing it. Trying to assemble it while on a ladder is dangerous, and you could ultimately damage the fixture.

Additional Installation Tips

If the chandelier is being installed above a dining room table, the lowest part of the chandelier should be at least 34 inches above the tabletop.

Avoid using high-wattage bulbs. They generate a lot of heat that can damage the chandelier, plus, with numerous low-wattage bulbs, the fixture will supply enough light for your needs.

To create just the right mood, install a dimmer switch for your chandelier.

For safety reasons, you should install the chandelier at least 48 inches from all walls or from the edge of the room.
