Install Flush Fluorescent Light Fixtures

Fluorescent wall or ceiling lights throw a brighter, colder light than standard lighting. However, they install in the same way, with two wire connections, between black and white wires, plus a bare ground wire. Flush-mounting refers to florescent lights that are mounted directly to the ceiling, as opposed to hanging down.

Instructions

1. Turn off power to the existing fixture at the house fuse box.

2. Remove the fixture by extracting the screws that hold it to the electrical box in the ceiling. Lower the fixture. Disconnect the wires behind it, leaving them exposed in the box.

3. Connect the mounting plate that came with your new fixture to the electrical box, using the provided screws. In most cases, the mounting plate will be a metal disk or square with holes in it that allow access to the wires in the box.

4. Wrap the end of the bare copper ground wire from the box around the green ground screw on the mounting plate. Tighten the screw.

5. Connect the black and white wires from the new fixture to the black and white wires from the electrical box, linking each to its own color. Make the connections by holding the wire ends side by side and twisting a wire cap over both at once.

6. Set the light fixture onto the mounting plate, tucking the wires into the electrical box as you do. Secure the fixture to the plate with the provide screws.

7. Turn on the power.
