Repair A Waterdamaged Textured Ceiling

Textured ceilings are usually plaster or drywall that have been covered in textured paint. This is paint with added thickeners and solids. On a wall or ceiling, it has a grainy look. Some homeowners use a trowel to give the paint an even more dramatic textured look. If your textured ceiling sustains water damage, you must redo the damaged area and then match the texture.

Instructions

1. Scrape the damaged area with your drywall knife, removing all loose plaster or damaged drywall.

2. Spread patching plaster into the damaged area, using your drywall knife. Spread it about 3/8th of an inch thick. Let it dry overnight.

3. Apply another layer of plaster. Let it dry. If the plaster still isn't even with the surrounding ceiling, then apply a third layer, and repeat until it is.

4. Sand the plaster by hand, getting it smooth and flat. The surface of the new plaster should be roughly even with the surrounding plaster, but it will still not resemble the rest of a ceiling that has a troweled texture.

5. Cover the new plaster with primer, using a roller. Allow it to dry overnight.

6. Apply textured paint on the new plaster, using a roller. Apply a thick coat, and then work it with a trowel to match the texture of the surrounding surface.
