Use Ceiling Fans To Heat A Room

A ceiling fan can help heat a room in winter.

A ceiling fan is relatively inexpensive and is an attractive and practical way to save on energy costs. Whether cooling a room or heating it, a ceiling fan works by moving air around a room. Since warm air rises, forcing the air downward with a ceiling fan helps heat the room. During the winter months, using a ceiling fan can cut your home's energy use up to 10 percent, according to Salt River Project in Phoenix.

Instructions

1. Set a ladder under your ceiling fan. Climb the ladder carefully up to the fan. Reverse the switch on the fan motor from its summer setting, so the fan will turn in a clockwise direction. This produces an updraft in the room and forces warm air downward.

2. Set the fan on a low setting. A fan creates a breeze that cools the body, but a breeze is not desired in the winter. A lower setting limits the breeze and results in a room that is more evenly heated.

3. Adjust your thermostat lower in accordance with the warmer conditions that now exist in the room. You can use a lower setting because the fan helps distribute the heat more evenly throughout the room, rather than rising up to the ceiling.
