Ceiling Fan Wiring Problems
Installing a new ceiling fan and light combination is a popular upgrade for homeowners. The old light fixture is removed and the ceiling electrical box is replaced with a ceiling fan box. Assembling, wiring and installing the new fan completes the project.
Missing Wires
Controlling a fan and a light independently requires three wires and two switches, but existing wiring only supplies two wires and one switch. Buy a fan-light combination with a remote control.
Dimmer Switch
A dimmer switch will ruin the motor on a modern fan. Buy and install an electronic fan controller made for your fan to control the speed.
Wrong Switch Type
The old light was controlled by three-way switches. Replace one three-way switch with a one-way switch and two remote control units.
Three-Way Switches
Hard wire the fan by connecting the black and white fan wires to the black and white house wiring and control the fan with the pull chains or remote. Connect the lights to the three-way switches.
Too Many Wires
There are four wires in the fan and only two in the ceiling box. Connect the black and blue fan wires to the black house wire. The green or bare wire connects to the metal box. Connect the two white wires.
Different Wire Colors
The fan and light wire colors don't match the wire colors in the ceiling box. Connect white to white. Look at the switches and connect the colored wire from one to the light and the other to the fan.
