Install Flushmount Interior Ceiling Lights

Ceiling lights are generally connected to your home's electrical system by two wires: a black wire that delivers the power to the fixture, and a white neutral wire that completes the circuit back to the power source. A third wire of bare copper acts as a "ground" so the current has somewhere to go in case of a power surge. These basic principles make it easy to install a new light fixture, especially with today's kits, which are designed for do-it-yourself installation. Flush-mounted lights sit directly against the ceiling, and are usually easier to install than hanging lights.

Instructions

1. Shut off the electricity to the old fixture at the fuse box.

2. Take out the screws that hold the existing fixture in place, using a screwdriver. Disconnect the wires between the fixture and the exposed electrical box behind it by untwisting the wire caps that hold them together.

3. Locate the mounting bracket that came with the new fixture. It will be a flat metal plate with holes in it. Set it against the electrical box, line up the screw holes and secure it with the provided screws.

4. Twist the bare copper ground wire from the electrical box around the green grounding screw on the mounting bracket. Tighten the screw.

5. Position the light fixture near the electrical box. Hold the white wires from the fixture and the box alongside each other, and twist a wire cap over both at once. Repeat this step for the two black wires.

6. Tuck the wires and wire caps into the electrical box. Hold the fixture against the box and secure it to the bracket with the provided screws. The base of the light should cover the whole box and part of the ceiling around it.

7. Turn on the electricity at the fuse box.
