Hook Up Hampton Bay Ceiling Fans

The Hampton Bay brand of ceiling fans is very popular with do-it-yourself homeowners because of their ease of installation. These fans include things like mounting hooks that allow the casing to hang off the side of the electrical box while you are wiring the fan, and clip-on blades, so that you don't have to screw them on while holding them over your head. As with all ceiling fans, it's important that Hampton Bay fans are mounted to properly installed electrical boxes with no movement to them. In most cases, you can install the fans in place of an existing ceiling light.

Instructions

1. Turn off power to the ceiling light at your house's circuit box. If you have a fuse box, pull out the fuse for the circuit.

2. Take out the screws holding the existing fixture to the ceiling and disconnect the wires from above it, exposing the ceiling electrical box with wires in it.

3. Pull on the box to ensure that it's properly mounted to the ceiling joist. If it moves at all, stop the project and have it inspected by a professional. If doesn't move, proceed with the fan installation.

4. Set the mounting bracket from your Hampton Bay fan kit onto the electrical box, by lining up the screw holes and inserting the provided screws.

5. Twist the copper ground wire from the box onto the green ground screw on the installation bracket. Tighten the screw.

6. Assemble the Hampton Bay fan on the floor according to the instructions that came with it, but don't attach the blades.

7. Hang the fan casing (without the blades) from the hook that's on the mounting bracket, which will position the casing sideways so you can access the wires.

8. Connect the black wire from the fan to the black wire from the electrical box, by twisting a wire cap over both wires. Repeat for the two white wires. Tuck the wire connections into the electrical box.

9. Slip the fan housing off the hooks and immediately lift it to the mounting bracket. Mount the housing to the bracket with the screws that came with it.

10. Turn on the power. Test the fan motor. Once you're sure it's properly connected, install the fan blades according to the instructions. (Note: In most newer models, the blades will snap on without screws.)
