Change Ceiling Fan Blades

Change Ceiling Fan Blades

If you have a 10- or 20-year-old ceiling fan that could use some updating, one inexpensive approach is to simply change the fan's blades. Most manufacturers market replacement blades in different shades of wood grain, white and wicker. Ideally, contact your fan's manufacturer to see if replacements exist because they will be best suited to your fan. If not, you can buy replacement blades at most home and garden stores, but be sure they are similar in size and weight to your original blades. With the right tools, you can change ceiling fan blades in less than 15 minutes.

Instructions

1. Turn off the switch to the fan so the blades don't activate while you're removing them. Inspect the screws in the brackets to determine whether they are attached with Phillips screws or standard screws.

2. Unscrew the screws in each bracket that holds a blade in place. Hold the fan blade in one hand while you are removing the screws. Set the screws and removed blades aside.

3. Attach manufacturer's replacement blades to your fan, screwing the blades to each bracket. Make sure the holes on the new blades are in the same places as on the old blades to ensure proper balance.

4. Perform this step only if the replacement blades you bought did not come from your fan's manufacturer and do not have pre-drilled holes. Place one of the old blades atop a replacement blade. Put a pen through each hole to mark where your screws will go on the replacement blade. Place the marked replacement blade on top of your other new blades and drill your screw holes, making sure they are in the exact location on each blade. Attach the blades to your fan's brackets.
