Connect Insulated Ducting Pipe With A Ceiling Register

Attaching insulated ducting pipe is a simple, but important, step in installing your HVAC system.

Insulated duct is the most commonly used duct material for residential construction. It's lightweight, flexible, inexpensive and energy efficient. Because it's flexible, take care not to crimp it, as this will reduce airflow and efficiency. Connecting insulated duct pipe to a ceiling register is a simple project that requires basic mechanical skill and, depending on how you install it, basic materials.

Instructions

1. Run the insulated duct from the air handler to the ceiling register with as few bends as possible: Run it either in the cavity between two ceiling joists or hang it with duct straps nailed to the roof rafters and wrapped around the duct.

2. Slide a 90 degree elbow onto the boot end of the ceiling register. Wrap foil duct tape around the seam between the elbow and boot to secure the connection.

3. Slide the insulated duct over the other end of the 90 degree elbow and secure it with foil duct tape. Turn on the HVAC system to test the register.
