Layout Recessed Lighting

Recessed light fixtures can give you additional task lighting.

Recessed lighting can be installed in many home ceilings. When they are all wired together, you will be able to turn on every recessed light fixture within a room by flicking one light switch. As a bonus, recessed lighting does not require heavy dusting and cleaning, as a chandelier or exposed light fixtures and lampshades do. Before installing your recessed lighting, plan the layout.

Instructions

1. Use a measuring tape to measure 2 feet out from the wall all the way around the room if you have a standard 8-foot ceiling. No recessed lighting should be installed between that line and the wall.

2. Measure farther out from the wall if your ceilings are higher than 8 feet. For every 2 feet over 8, add 6 inches to the measurement. For example, if you have a 10-foot ceiling, measure out 2.5 feet.

3. Space recessed light fixtures for general lighting about 4 feet apart. They do not need to be closer together than this. Use the measuring tape to get a better idea of where they will be placed on your ceiling.

4. Move the recessed light fixtures a little closer together in the layout over areas that need more light, such as for task lighting or to illuminate a piece of artwork. These lights can be placed about 3.2 feet apart for additional light.

5. Plan for recessed lighting in a hallway to be installed down the middle of the ceiling. These should be spaced 4 feet apart.
