What Size Ceiling Fan To Buy

Get a rod with a long downrod for tall ceilings.

Room size is the main thing to consider when determining ceiling fan size. The ceiling height and square footage play a role in determine the diameter of the blade sweep, as well as the length of the downrod.

Potential

It's essential to measure a room when choosing what size ceiling fan to buy. The square footage, combined with the ceiling height, will determine the appropriate unit.

Size

Rooms of 120 square feet or more with 8-foot ceilings ideally need 52-inch fans. In small rooms, however, these look too big and produce too much air movement. Use a 30-inch, 36-inch or 42-inch fan in rooms that measure 64 square feet. A 44-inch fan works well in rooms of 100 to 120 square feet. As the ceiling height increases, you can install a slightly larger fan.

Potential

As the size of the blades decrease, the motor size does, too, making the unit less powerful. Big rooms measuring 224 square feet and larger should have two ceiling fans for best results.

Considerations

Another measurement to take into account is the downrod. This is the rod that connects the electrical unit in the ceiling to the fan blades. A 3-inch downrod is standard for ceilings between 9 feet and 11 feet high. A 10- to 12-foot ceiling can have a 12-inch downrod, 11- to 13-foot ceilings can have downrods up to 24 inches long, and a 15-foot or higher ceiling can have up to a 72-inch downrod. Rooms with shorter ceilings should have "hugger" fans or flush-mounted fans.
