Mount Fluorescent Fixtures

Reflectors allow fluorescent fixtures to give off more light.

Fluorescent fixtures can be large rectangles, small and round, or a variety of sizes in between. They are an easy way to add a bright, energy-efficient illumination to kitchens, bathrooms and garages. Residential fluorescent light fixtures typically include a light diffuser to cover the bulbs, while large fixtures for the garage have aluminum reflectors and no covers for more light. However, installation for both types is the same.

Instructions

1. Locate a ceiling stud, using a stud finder, where you want to mount the fluorescent fixture. If there is no stud present, the fixture can be mounted into the drywall with toggle bolts. Mark the area where the screws will be installed.

2. Remove the light cover on the fixture, if it has one. Follow the product directions to connect the wires or add pigtails. Remove the access covers over the mounting screws, if applicable. Locate any mounting hardware included with the fixture.

3. Hold the fixture to the ceiling in the predetermined location. Screw the fixture to the ceiling. Cover the screws with the access cover, if included. Wire the light according to the product directions, or plug the fixture into the outlet.

4. Install the fluorescent light in the fixture. Replace the light diffuser cover.
