Install Garage Ceiling Storage

Garage ceiling storage will remove the clutter from your garage.

Installing garage ceiling storage is a great way to add more storage to your home and not have to worry about tripping over items or them possibly getting wet in a flooded garage or basement. You can easily take the clutter out of your garage with overhead storage and still have room for your cars or a workshop in the garage. It only takes one afternoon and a few basic tools and you can be on your way to having garage ceiling storage that makes your garage more organized and clutter-free.

Instructions

1. Find the framing on the garage ceiling where you want to hang your overhead storage. Be sure that you have plenty of space for the storage and that it will not be affected by the garage door or by a vehicle that you park in the garage. If you have a finished garage ceiling you will need to use a stud finder to find the structural beams. Mark the outside edges of the beams with a pencil for reference.

2. Mark the location of the overhead shelf's brackets and mounting screws with a pencil on the beam. Drill a pilot hole for the screws. Depending on the size of the garage ceiling storage there may be one or more mounting brackets to install on each ceiling beam.

3. Use a socket set or a drill with a socket bit to drive the screws into the beams so they tighten against the brackets.

4. Install the supports for the garage ceiling storage. Determine the maximum length of the mount posts to which you will fasten the supports. If needed you may have to fit the pieces together and adjust their lengths and then insert pins and retainer clips depending on the model and size of the overhead storage. Be sure that you read the directions that come with your storage kit to determine the maximum length for the unit.

5. Use a tape measure to confirm that all of the supports are set at the same depth. Repeat installing the supports and measuring on the other side.

6. Place the shelves on top of the shelf supports with the raised lip facing down so that it fits snugly on the shelf supports. Connect the shelves to the supports with the hardware that comes with the overhead storage kit.

7. Load the garage ceiling storage shelves with your items making sure that you distribute the weight evenly as possible. Be sure to check the mounting bolts and brackets at least twice a year and tighten them if necessary as vibration from the garage door opening and closing may loosen them up.
