Paint Vaulted Ceilings

Painting a vaulted ceiling may sound like a complicated endeavor, especially those that reach great heights. Actually, it's a little easier than painting a typical flat ceiling, since the sloped sides provide relief from craning your neck. Gather all of the tools you need and take the time to prepare the room. If you've painted walls, you probably already have the skills to tackle your vaulted ceiling. The trickiest part is deciding which color to use.

Instructions

1. Prepare the room. Remove all furniture and other items or cover them with plastic. Also cover all areas of the floor with a heavy-duty dropcloth, as it is likely that you will spill some paint unintentionally. Cover window sills and frames as well as door frames, as paint can also drip on these edges; masking tape works well for this. If you have a ceiling fan, cover and tape it, too.

2. Make any necessary repairs. If you see cracks, stains or blemishes, now is the time to cover them so your paint job will turn out pristine. Use a stain-blocking primer to seal areas with water damage, and use caulk or joint compound to fill in any holes or cracks. Allow them to dry thoroughly and then clean the surfaces of your vaulted ceiling.

3. Cut in paint at the edges and corners, using a brush. You may choose to tape off areas that you do not wish to paint, such as the walls below, but many people skip this step because paint often wicks beneath the tape, creating a rough edge. Use a ladder or brush extender to reach high places. In some extreme cases, scaffolding may be necessary.

4. Paint the sloped walls of the vault and the flat top of the ceiling with a roller. Again, use a ladder or roller extender to reach greater heights. Roll in a straight line to ensure a smooth finish without seams, and don't press too hard to avoid splatters. Overlap each previous paint stroke to blend. Depending on the type and color of paint you are using, it may require two or more coats.
