Wire A Panasonic Whisperlite Exhaust Fan

Panasonic WhisperLite exhaust fans mount on the ceiling and serve a dual purpose as both an exhaust fan and a light. Both the blowing system and the lighting system are energy-efficient. The quiet blowing system has a damper installed to help prevent air back-flow. It also uses a sirroco fan to reduce the noise. The lighting system saves energy by using florescent lights instead of incandescent. The two 18-watt florescent bulbs produce as much light as one 100 watt incandescent. You need to wire both the exhaust system and the lighting system to an electrical source to operate.

Instructions

1. Turn off power to the bathroom exhaust fan wiring from the main breaker box. Hold a circuit tester to the wires to ensure no power runs through them.

2. Wrap a small piece of masking tape around each wire and label it either "light" or "fan" to help keep track of each wire's source. If you are not sure which wires come from which source, follow the wires from the attic and down the wall to the switch that controls them.

3. Mount the Panasonic fan body in the ceiling, according to the manufacturer's directions. Locate the black, white and green or bare copper wires you installed in the body during the installation process. These wires come up to the body from a main power supply, such as the breaker box. Use a wire stripper to remove the rubber coating from the last 1/2 inch of each wire's end, if necessary.

4. Connect the white wire from the fan body to the white wire labeled "fan". Twist a wire nut over the wires to hold them together. Connect the black wire from the fan body to the black wire labeled "fan" and twist a wire nut over them.

5. Unscrew the green grounding screw on the fan body's side. Bend the green or bare-copper ground wire into a "U" shape, with a pliers. Wrap the wire around the grounding screw and tighten the screw to hold the wire in place.

6. Lift the Panasonic lighting unit up to the ceiling. Locate the black and white wires coming from the unit and the black and white wires you labeled "light" in Step 1. Strip the wires' ends with a wire stripper, if necessary. Connect black to black with a wire nut and white to white with a wire nut. Finish the exhaust fan's installation according to Panasonic's directions.
