Remove A Crystal Chandelier From The Ceiling

Remove crystal chandeliers carefully to prevent damage.

The electrical components of crystal chandeliers are constructed just like normal light fixtures, but the crystal pendants hang on many hooks around the fixture. Remove a crystal chandelier from a ceiling carefully -- you will be working at a high height, and you also don't want to damage the pendants. Another person assisting with the process can be helpful due the weight of the fixture.

Instructions

1. Locate the main fuse box and shut off the power to the room where the crystal chandelier is located.

2. Place a step ladder underneath but slightly to the side of the chandelier so that you have room to remove it easily.

3. Climb up onto a ladder carrying a bowl or a cloth bag of some sort. Examine each crystal pendant to determine how it is attached to the fixture, which is typically by a small hook or loop. Lift each pendant up off of the fixture and place it gently into the bowl or bag. Climb down from the ladder and reposition it as needed until you have removed as many pendants as possible.

4. Examine the base of the chandelier where it mounts to the ceiling. Locate the small metal loop that extends from the ceiling and turn it counterclockwise with your hand until it detaches from the ceiling. Ask another person to climb up on another ladder and hold the base of the chandelier to prevent it from damaging the ceiling wires.

5. Reach up into the ceiling hole and pull down on the wires gently until you locate the white, black and green or copper wires. Grasp the plastic cap that connects the wires and twist them counterclockwise to remove them. Untangle each ceiling wire from the chandelier wire until the chandelier is free.

6. Lower the chandelier gently to the ground.
